Gophers Look to Keep it Rolling in Home-and-Home Series with the Huskies

On Saturday, the Gophers will celebrate the 2012 and 2013 National Champion teams along with 25 seasons of Gopher women's hockey.

MINNEAPOLIS – The No. 2 Golden Gopher women's hockey team looks to remain undefeated with a home-and-home series with St. Cloud State on the slate this weekend. The Gophers hit the road for their second away game of the season at 3:00 pm on Friday in St. Cloud before returning home for a 2:00 pm puck drop at Ridder Arena on Saturday.

Dominance Against the Mavs
Last weekend, the Gophers rode an offensive explosion to their second series sweep of the season. Minnesota passed its first road test of the year with flying colors with an 11-0 win in Mankato on Friday afternoon. Nine Gophers lit the lamp, including a fourth-career hat-trick from Grace Zumwinkle. Eleven goals is the largest margin of victory in the all-time series between the two programs. The Maroon and Gold followed up a historic Friday by cruising to a 9-4 win on Saturday. 20 goals are the most Minnesota has scored in a single series since 1999.

Scouting the Huskies
In Brian Idalski's first season at the helm, the Huskies (2-4-0, 0-4-0) have yet to win a WCHA contest after starting the year with a sweep over RPI. A difficult opening-stretch of conference matchups has seen St. Cloud State drop two road games to top-ranked Ohio State before falling twice to No. 4/5 Wisconsin at home last weekend. The Huskies were leading 2-1 over the Badgers late on Saturday before falling 3-2 in overtime. Jenniina Nylund leads the team in goals (5) and points (7) through six games. Minnesota leads the all-time series 100-3-3.

Up and Down the Lineup
15 different Gophers have recorded at least one goal through the first four games with all four lines lighting the lamp. Nine different goalscorers on Friday is the first time Minnesota has accomplished that feat since 2013. Olympic-returners Abbey Murphy and Grace Zumwinkle lead the team with five goals and four assists each.

Maroon and Gold Firsts
On Friday, freshmen Madison Kaiser and Nelli Laitinen each recorded their first-career goals. On Saturday, freshman forward Josefin Bouveng stole the show on Saturday with her first, second and third-career goals. The Swedish rookie finished the weekend with five points (3g-2a) and a plus-four rating.

WCHA Honors
On Monday, fifth-year forward Grace Zumwinkle and sophomore goaltender Skylar Vetter were honored by the WCHA as weekly award winners. Zumwinkle earned her eighth WCHA Forward of the Week honor after a seven-point (4g-3a) weekend. Vetter was named WCHA Goaltender of the Week for the second time in her career after a 17-save shutout on Friday and a two-save relief performance on Saturday.

Zumwinkle Climbs the Ranks
On Friday, Grace Zumwinkle tallied three goals to surpass Gopher-great Gigi Marvin with 88 career goals. The Excelsior, Minn., native added another goal on Saturday to move into a tie with Ambria Thomas for eighth place in program history. Zumwinkle's 89 goals are four shy of Dani Cameranesi for seventh all-time in program history.

Scoring Milestones on the Horizon
Fifth-year forward Taylor Heise continues to climb the program ranks as Minnesota's active career scoring leader with 166 career points (68g-98a) in 138 career games. Fifth-year forwards Abigail Boreen (41g-53a), Emily Oden (28g-65a) and Catie Skaja (36g-48a) are the closest active skaters to the century mark.

Behind the Bench
Head coach Brad Frost is back for his 16th season as the bench boss of Gopher Women's Hockey. Under Frost's guidance, the program has posted a 446-93-36 record with four national titles and seven conference titles. Natalie Darwitz is back behind the bench for her fourth season as assistant coach and is joined by newly promoted Jessica Scott, who served as the program's Director of Operations for the last three seasons.

Quest for Eighth National Title
Minnesota has won seven national championships (2000, 2004, 2005, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2016) and looks for a historic eighth title national crown in 2022-23.
