University of Minnesota men's basketball standout Jamison Battle (Robbinsdale, Minn.) has been named to the 2023 Julius Erving Award top 20 watch list for the nation's best small forwards. It is Battle's first watch list honor of his career and second preseason honor this season.Â
A junior forward, Battle joined the Golden Gophers in the 2021-22 season after a two-year stint at George Washington. Named a Honorable Mention All-Big Ten selection in 2022, Battle returns as one of the Big Ten's leading scorers. He was named a Preseason All-Big Ten this year, his first preseason honor of his career. In conference action alone, Battle averaged 17.1 points during Big Ten play, and ranked eighth in conference scoring. In overall play, he averaged a team-best 17.5 points and 6.3 rebounds last season as a sophomore. Battle had 27 double-figure scoring games, including 11 with 20 or more points. He also established a team-best 39 points at Maryland, which tied sixth in school history for points in a game. Battle was named a Third Team All-A10 athlete at George Washington in 2020-21, where he averaged 17.3. Off the court, the DeLaSalle graduate is a sports management major and was named to the 2021-22 NABC Honors Court, given to individuals with cumulative grade point averages of 3.2 or higher.Â
Fan Voting presented by Dell Technologies will open up on Friday, October 28. The top 10 player selections from the fan vote will get an additional vote towards making the next round.Â
This list will be narrowed down to 10 in late January and then 5 finalists will be selected in late February that will be presented to Julius Erving and the selection committee. The winner of this award will be presented on a date later to be determined. Presentation details will be announced at a later date. Â
The Golden Gophers play St. Olaf in an exhibition game on Nov. 2, with the season opener Nov. 7 vs. Western Michigan.
