Heise, Morgan receive legacy awards
Nearly 200 University of Minnesota student-athletes joined scholarship donors and other Gopher supporters on Wednesday evening in Club Cambria at Huntington Bank Stadium to celebrate the accomplishments of Gopher teams and student-athletes from the previous year, as well as the donors who support athletic scholarships and make those accomplishments possible.
The night, which included remarks from Director of Athletics Mark Coyle, was highlighted when the Patty Berg and Henry Williams Legacy Awards were announced. The awards are given annually to recognize an outstanding male and female student-athlete at the University of Minnesota.
Women's hockey forward Taylor Heise received the Patty Berg Award, while football quarterback Tanner Morgan was honored with the Henry Williams Award.
Heise received the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award last season, which is presented annually to the best player in women's hockey. She was also named WCHA Player of the Year and was First Team All-American, All-WCHA First Team and All-USCHO First Team. Heise led the nation with 66 points and led the Gophers in points (66), goals (29), assists (37), shots (235), game-winning goals (6), and short-handed goals (5). She helped the Gophers win the WCHA regular-season championship and became the first Gopher to reach the 60-point mark since Dani Cameranesi did so in the 2015-16 season. She was also named CoSIDA Academic All-District, WCHA All-Academic Team and an Academic All-Big Ten member.
Morgan, who received the Henry Williams Award, is the winningest quarterback in school history with a record of 31-13. He owns 12 single-season Minnesota records and ranks first in school history with a career completion percentage of .623. Morgan ranks second in school history in completions (633), passing yards (9,215) and touchdown passes (63) and is third in school history in passing attempts (1,015). He been named All-Big Ten Second Team, All-Big Ten Honorable Mention, Davey O'Brien Award semifinalist, The Manning Award finalist, Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, Big Ten Freshman of the Week and Academic All-Big Ten in his career.
More than 500 Gopher student-athletes receive some form of scholarship support each year, with nearly half of those receiving support from endowed scholarships. Endowed scholarships are a particularly sustainable funding source, as the initial contribution is invested as principle and a portion of the annual return then fuels the endowed scholarship, covering expenses such as tuition, books, and room and board. That long-term stability helps donors to these scholarships leave a lasting legacy of support for Gopher Athletics and provide critical funding toward the department's scholarship bill.
