Minnesota has now recorded the five highest GSR statistics in school history over the last five years

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota continues to showcase its academic standards as Maroon & Gold student-athletes posted another strong showing on Tuesday with the release of the NCAA's newest Graduation Success Rate (GSR).

With a 94 percent graduation rate, Minnesota has now recorded the five highest GSR statistics in school history over the last five years with a school-record 96 percent last year, 94 percent in both 2020 and 2019 and a 93 percent rate in 2018. The Maroon & Gold also rank tied for fourth with Illinois in the Big Ten in the current GSR data behind Northwestern (98 percent), Michigan (96) and Nebraska (95).

This year's GSR primarily focuses on the six-year cohorts who came to the 'U' as freshman in 2015. The GSR shows the percentage of student-athletes on any given team who earn a college degree within six years of starting school. It represents data from first-time freshmen, student-athletes who entered at midyear, and student-athletes who transferred into the University of Minnesota between 2012 and 2015. It excludes student-athletes who transfer from the university in good academic standing.

Nine Minnesota programs posted 100 percent graduation rates for the aforementioned time frame: women's basketball, women's cross country and track and field, men's and women's golf, gymnastics, women's hockey, soccer, women's swimming and diving and tennis. In all, 17 of the 19 programs on campus had grad rates at or above 90 percent.

The NCAA also released Federal Graduation Rates (FGR) in its report, which categorizes student-athletes who transfer from or leave their initial school for any reason as non-graduates, even if they leave in good academic standing or subsequently graduate from another institution. For the 2015-16 cohort, Gopher Athletics had an 80 percent FGR. In the four-class average from 2012-2015, Minnesota ranked third in the Big Ten along with Michigan State behind only Northwestern (95 percent) and Michigan (83).
