Eleven Recognized by Big Ten on Defense, Special Teams

Nubin named Second Team, Sori-Marin placed on Third Team
The Big Ten announced all-conference performers on defense and special teams today and the Gophers had 11 players recognized.Â
Leading the way was defensive back Tyler Nubin, who was named Second Team All-Big Ten by coaches and the media. Linebacker Mariano Sori-Marin was placed on the Third Team by the coaches and was an Honorable Mention selection by the media.Â
Nubin led Minnesota with four interceptions this year and also finished third on the team in tackles (55) and tied for second in solo tackles (37). He also had two tackles for loss, broke up three passes and forced one fumble.Â
Sori-Marin paced the Gophers in tackles (78), solo tackles (38) and tied for the team lead in tackles for loss (4.5). He also had one sack on the season and broke up three passes.Â
On defense, Cody Lindenberg, Danny Striggow, Trill Carter, Jordan Howden, Kyler Baugh, Terell Smith and Thomas Rush were all named Honorable Mention.Â
Lindenberg was second on the team with 60 tackles, while Striggow had 4.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks and one interception. Carter finished with 16 tackles, while Baugh ended the regular season with 33. Rush had 31 tackles and one forced fumble, while Smith made 38 tackles, broke up five passes and had two interceptions.Â
Kicker Matthew Trickett and return specialist Quentin Redding were both named Honorable Mention. Trickett has made 15-of-18 field goals this year and is a perfect 42-of-42 on point-after attempts. His 83.3 conversion percentage ranks third in the Big Ten. Redding is sixth in the Big Ten in kick returns (22.9 average) and seventh in punt returns (6.0 average).
Minnesota ended the regular season ranked sixth in total defense, allowing only 279.5 yards per game. That was the lowest in school history since Minnesota allowed only 225.1 yards per game in 1966. The Gophers allowed only 13.33 points per game, which ranked fifth in the nation and was the lowest in school history since 1967 when they allowed only 10.6 points per game in 10 games.Â
The Big Ten will announce offensive selections on Wednesday.Â
