Gophers Drop Road Game to No. 16/13 Iowa 87-64

MINNEAPOLIS (Dec. 10, 2022) – The University of Minnesota (5-5, 1-1 B1G) dropped its first Big Ten Conference game to No. 16/13 Iowa (8-3, 2-0 B1G) on the road Saturday night. Mara Braun led Minnesota with 14 points and had three steals while fellow freshman Amaya Battle had 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting and had five rebounds and four assits. Â
Eight different Gophers scored throughout the evening with Destinee Oberg and Mallory Heyer eaching having eight, with Oberg finishing 3-of-3 from the floor and adding five rebounds in 13 minutes. Maggie Czinano, playing against her sister Monika for the first time, out rebounded her sister with eight, including four offensive, to Monika's five.Â
The opening quarter saw the Hawkeyes jump out to an 8-0 lead 1:48 into the contest. Minnesota fought its way back with an 11-4 run to bring the team back to within four at the 6:48 mark. The high pace continued throughout the quarter with Braun leading the way with six points, but Minnesota trailed 24-18 after 10 minutes.Â
In the second Iowa kept Minnesota at arms length, and at one point extended the lead to 17 with a 7-0 run in the middle of the quarter. The Maroon and Gold continued to stay within range of the Hawkeyes, getting back-to-back threes from Braun and a late triple from Heyer to put the score at 49-37 at the half.Â
The second half started similarly to the opening quarter with Iowa jumping out to a 21-point lead with a 9-0 run. Minneosta responded with six points in a row, paired with a 7-2 run to end the quarter, to cut into Iowa's lead and trail just 66-54 heading into the final quarter.Â
In the fourth Iowa ramped up their defense, forcing Minnesota to shoot just 1-of-13 in the final 10 minutes from the floor and 0-of-6 from beyond the arc. Iowa outscored the Gophers 21-10 in the fourth.Â
As a team the Maroon and Gold shot 20-of-66 (30.3 percent) and hit 5-of-22 from three. The team connected on 19-of-28 from the free throw line and brought down 42 rebounds to Iowa's 49.Â
The University of Minnesota will have less than two days to prepare for Chicago State back at Williams Arena on Dec. 12. That game can be seen on B1G+ at 7 p.m. and can be heard on KFAN+ and on the iHeartRadio app.Â
