Maggie Werner is set to join Gopher softball for the 2023 season from Hortonville High School

MINNEAPOLIS - Head softball coach Piper Ritter announced Maggie Werner (Greenville, Wisconsin) has signed to join the University of Minnesota for the 2023 season adding to its recruiting class.

"Maggie is a hard-working infielder who has done everything in her power to prepare herself for this moment," Ritter said. "In getting to know Maggie we realized she is an intelligent, self-starting and extremely focused individual who will do whatever it takes to maximize her talent both academically and athletically. We are excited she has decided to call Minnesota her home."

Werner has excelled as a shortstop for Hortonville High School and with BATS Fastpitch summer ball. She was named honorable mention all-district and all-conference first team in 2021 after posting a .481 batting average and six home runs in her junior year with the Polar Bears.

During her prep career, Werner has earned 11 letters as a four-sport student-athlete, including four years in softball and basketball. She led the softball team at HHS to a 23-5 record a season ago and guided the basketball team to back-to-back appearances at the WIAA state basketball tournament in 2019 and 2020.

Werner intends to study biology and kinesiology while attending the University of Minnesota and is interested in nutritional sciences. She also is a member of the National Honor Society.

"I hadn't known what it meant to be a part of the University of Minnesota until I came to campus for the first time," Werner said. "I immediately felt that no other school was comparable both athletically and academically, but most importantly, I fell in love with the competitive atmosphere and team culture here at Minnesota and knew I wanted to become a Gopher."

The Gophers open the 2022 campaign in Orlando, Florida, Feb. 11-13 at the Black & Gold Classic hosted by UCF playing five games in less than 48 hours.
