STARTING FIVE
• The University of Minnesota men's basketball team returns to Williams Arena Saturday to host the Northwestern Wildcats. Game time is set for 3 p.m. and televised on Big Ten Network. The Golden Gophers faced the Wildcats twice last season, the first coming at Williams Arena on Feb. 25, 2021 in a 67-59 loss. Minnesota, however, won the last meeting between the two teams during the Big Ten tournament (March 10) in a 51-46 victory.
• The last time the Gophers defeated the Wildcats at home was during the 2019-20 season. Minnesota won, 77-68, on Jan. 5, 2020. Daniel Oturu had 19 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks in the win over the Wildcats that day.
• Minnesota is in the midst of a grueling four-game schedule in a week and three games in five days. The Northwestern game marks the last game of the seven-day stretch. The Gophers played Penn State Saturday night (76-70 win), Ohio State (Feb. 15) and at Penn State (Feb. 17). Minnesota is 1-2 in this stretch, looking to even the record Saturday. Gophers are back in action at home against Northwestern (Feb. 19). It marks the first time since 2018 (Vancouver Showcase) where the Gophers have played three games in four days. Minnesota played three regular season games, non tournament play, back in 1989. It marks the first time in Big Ten play to happen. The Feb. 17 game is a make up game that was postponed earlier due to COVID-19 protocols on the Gopher team.
• Minnesota head coach Ben Johnson has ties to both teams playing in Saturday's contest. As a student-athlete, Johnson started his collegiate playing career at Northwestern for two seasons before finishing his career at Minnesota. He tallied 533 points in 59 games as a Golden Gopher. He scored 1,202 in his four-year college career between the two institutions and posted a .423 field goal percentage.
• Jamison Battle reached his 1,000th collegiate point with his first made field goal of the Penn State game (2/17). Battl earned over 1,000 career points spanning over two and a half collegiate seasons when he scored 636 points at George Washington before transferring to Minnesota. He currently has 378 with the Gophers, totaling 1,014 collegiate points. Luke Loewe is sitting at 968 career points. The fifth-year senior held 769 career points with William & Mary and now has 199 as a Golden Gopher.
UP NEXT
