Winters 30, Scalia 23, Not Enough as No. 25/24 Iowa Wins at Home, 88-78

2/9/2022 6:12:00 PM | Women's Basketball

MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota (11-14, 4-9 B1G) fought to an 88-78 defeat on the road against No. 25/24 Iowa (16-6, 10-3 B1G) on Wednesday night at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Graduate student Deja Winters scored 30 for the Golden Gophers while Sara Scalia poured in 23 for her third-straight 20-point performance.

Winters was able to score 25 of her 30 points in the second half, notching a new career high for the first-year Gopher. Previous to Wednesday, Winters' career high was 27 with North Carolina A&T against Clemson on Dec. 20, 2019. For Scalia, her 23 points makes her the first player in nearly two years to score 20 points in three straight games.

After an Alanna Micheaux layup to get the Gophers up 2-0, Iowa used a 10-0 run to take control of the game early on at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Runs were a theme in the opening 10 minutes with the Gophers scoring the next five before Iowa scored the next seven. In the final 3:53 of the quarter, Minnesota outscored the Hawkeyes 14-10 to cut the score to 27-21 by the end of the frame.

The second quarter continued to see Minnesota respond to adversity on the road. Iowa's lead grew to as much as 13 in the second before eight-straight points by Sara Scalia cut the lead to 39-34 with 2:34 to go in the half. From there on the two teams exchanged a trio of free throws to head into the locker room with Iowa's lead at 42-37 despite the Hawkeyes shooting 45.5 percent to the Gophers 33.3 percent from the floor.

The third quarter saw the eruption of Winters on the offensive end. The Cleveland, Ohio, native scored 13 of the Gophers 24 in the quarter, helping the Maroon and Gold outscore the Hawkeyes 24-20. Scalia was able to add six of her own during the third and pulled the Gophers to within one with 10 minutes to play on the road.

Iowa turned it up at the start of the fourth quarter, scoring the first 11 points in the frame to jump to a double-digit lead with 6:56 to go in the game. The Gophers would not go away, led by Winters who scored 12 of the final 15 points for the Gophers, pulling to within nine with 5:05 to go, but the Hawkeyes kept the Gophers at bay in the final minutes, and came out with the 10-point win.

As a team the Gophers shot 27-of-69 (39.1 percent) from the floor and hit on 9-of-22 (40.9 percent) from the 3-point line. Through three quarters Minnesota held the rebound advantage at 35-28 but a 10-1 blitz on the glass in the fourth quarter by the Hawkeyes helped the Black and Gold take the battle on the boards 38-36.

Minnesota returns home for a quick turnaround against Northwestern (13-8, 5-5 B1G) on Friday afternoon. The game, which can be viewed on B1G+, is set for a 3:30 p.m. CT tip. Fans can also listen to the game on KFAN+ with Justin Gaard and Lynnette Sjoquist on the call.
