Minnesota overtakes Cal on final rotation to punch ticket to the national championship

The No. 8 University of Minnesota gymnastics team competed in the Norman Regional Final on Saturday evening and earned a score of 197.725 to advance to the April 14-16 NCAA National Championships in Fort Worth, Texas.

Minnesota was competing against No. 1 Oklahoma (198.250), No. 9 California (197.300) and No. 14 Arkansas (196.675). The top two teams advanced to the NCAA National Championships, so Oklahoma and Minnesota are moving on to Texas.

Minnesota entered the final rotation trailing California, but a meet-best floor routine propelled the Golden Gophers past the Golden Bears and punched their ticket to Texas.

Noteable
Minnesota qualified for the NCAA National Championships as a team for the sixth time ever. The Gophers also earned a spot in the championship meet in 1997 (10th-place finish), 2002 (ninth), 2013 (eighth), 2016 (12th) and 2021 (eighth). This marks the first time ever in school history that the Gophers qualified for the NCAA Championships as a team in consecutive years.

Quotable
"We are just thrilled," said head coach Jenny Hansen. "We started off fantastic on the vault. I was told that was our highest vaulting score in postseason history, so to start the meet that way, you can't ask for a better start. Bars was really solid all the way through with solid routines and everyone was hitting. Same with beam. I think that was huge as they were calm and aggressive all the way through. Then we got to end on our best event and bring it home on the floor. We went into our last event knowing that if they do their job then we are going to go (to nationals). We have so much confidence knowing we end on floor. We were behind going into that last event, but we knew we ended on floor and realized it would be hard to catch us. We knew that and I think that gave us confidence knowing that there are very few teams that can match the kind of scores we can on floor exercise."

All-Around
Ona Loper and Lexy Ramler placed first and second in the all-around among five competitors. Loper placed first with a score of 39.700 – the third highest score of her career – after posting a 9.900 or higher on every event. Loper scored a 9.950 on vault and floor and a 9.900 on bars and beam. Ramler took second in the all-around with a 39.600 after totaling a 9.925 on vault, a 9.875 on bars, a 9.900 on beam and a 9.900 on floor.

Event Breakdown
Vault
Minnesota opened the competition on the vault and had a day. The Gophers posted a 49.550, which is their third best score in team history. Minnesota was led by Maddie Quarles who dropped a career high 9.975 and then counted three more scores of 9.900 or above in Loper (9.950), Ramler (9.925) and Mya Hooten (9.900). Rounding out the scoring for Minnesota was Gianna Gerdes, who scored a 9.800.

Bars
Minnesota scored a 49.275 on the bars and Loper's 9.900 led the squad. Ramler was second for the Gophers with a 9.875 and was then followed by Tiarre Sale and Halle Remlinger who both scored a 9.850. Hooten and Hannah Willmarth both recorded a 9.800 to close out the scoring for Minnesota.

Beam
The Gophers scored a 49.250 on the beam as both Loper and Ramler delivered a 9.900. Gerdes and Abbie Nylin contributed a 9.825 each and Ali Sonier rounded out the scoring with a 9.800.

Floor
Minnesota entered the final rotation trailing Cal for that coveted second position to qualify for nationals. The Gophers, who have delivered all year on the floor, would not be denied as they recorded a meet-best 49.650 to send them to Texas. Hooten, who has three perfect 10s on the floor this year, led the Gophers with a nearly flawless 9.975. Loper scored a 9.950 and Remlinger had a 9.925. Ramler and Koch both ended the meet with a 9.900.
