Gophers Set to Face Virginia Tech in ACC/Big Ten Challenge

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota men's basketball team will face Virginia Tech in the 2022 ACC/Big Ten Men's Basketball Challenge, as the two conferences along with ESPN unveiled the event matchups Friday.
The Golden Gophers and Hokies will meet on Monday, Nov. 28 in Blacksburg, Va., with game time and television broadcast information to be announced at a later date. The 2022 campaign marks the 24th year of the Challenge, which started in 1999. ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU will combine to televise all 14 games and will also be streamed via the ESPN app.
This will be the second Big Ten/ACC game between the two teams as well as the second meeting in program history. The Golden Gophers last faced Virginia Tech in the 2011 Big Ten/ACC Challenge, where Minnesota earned a 58-55 win at Williams Arena. The 2022 contest will be the Gophers' first road game on the Hokies' home court, Cassell Coliseum.
Minnesota is 12-11 all-time in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge the past 23 years. The Golden Gophers have won their past three challenge games, including a dramatic 54-53 win last year at Pittsburgh. That win signified Minnesota's first road win since Feb. 23, 2020. In the previous two challenge games, Minnesota defeated Boston College in overtime (W, 85-80) at Williams Arena in 2020 and Clemson (W, 78-60) in 2019, also at the Barn.
Virginia Tech went 23-12 last season and 11-9 in conference play. The Hokies went on a four-game win streak to earn the program's first-ever ACC Tournament title and an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. Virginia Tech fell to Texas in the First Round of the Tournament, the team's fifth-straight NCAA appearance. The Hokies won last year's Big Ten/ACC Challenge game as they defeated Maryland, 62-58, in College Park, Md.
