Curry, Nylin Named Minnesota’s Outstanding Sportsmanship Award Honorees
7/12/2022 9:10:00 AM | Athletics, Men's Basketball
The Big Ten announced today that men's basketball's Eric Curry and gymnast Abbie Nylin were named Minnesota's Outstanding Sportsmanship Award honorees today. The league recognized two student-athletes from each school with the honor.
Curry and Nylin were chosen because they have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. They respected their opponent, were enthusiastic about competing, did their best at all times and enjoyed competing no matter the outcome.
After suffering multiple injuries throughout his University of Minnesota career, Curry announced he was returning for one final Gopher season in 2021-22. It proved to be his best point production year of his college career. Curry averaged 7.7 points, bettering his 3.7 ppg he had in 2020-21 and 5.5 his freshman year. He started in 26 games his final year and averaged 27.8 minutes, both career highs. He received the team's Big Ten Sportsmanship award and was named Academic All-Big Ten. Curry holds a bachelor's degree in communications and a master's degree in youth development and leadership, which he obtained this past May.
Nylin competed in 11 meets for the Gophers and was a beam specialist in 2022. She recorded a career and season high 9.875 in a tri-meet against UCLA and Iowa and was a strong performer for the Gophers in the postseason. Nylin posted a 9.800 and a 9.825 at NCAA Regionals and then recorded a 9.800 at the NCAA Championships. Nylin received the team's Big Ten Sportsmanship award and was named Academic All-Big Ten.
