Gophers Down DCTC in Exhibition

Minnesota took on DCTC in its final exhibition of the fall
MINNEAPOLIS -- The Minnesota Golden Gophers baseball team took down Dakota County Technical College, 12-4, on Friday night in an exhibition at Siebert Field.
Minnesota tallied 10 hits and held DCTC to six on the evening.
Offensively, junior utility player Boston Merila went 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored while freshman Kris Hokenson went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Freshman Drew Berkland also went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks.
The Minnesota pitching staff combined to strike out 18 Blue Knights batters while allowing just one hit on the night.
The Gophers scored four runs in the first inning off a pair of hits by Ike Mezzenga and Drew Berkland and a pair of errors by DCTC.
Sam Malec started the game and pitched two scoreless innings before George Klassen followed him up with a pair of scoreless innings himself.
Kyle Bork doubled down the left field line and came around to score with two outs in the third to put the 'U' up 5-0.
The 'U' tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a commanding 9-0 lead. The Gophers would add three more in the bottom of the seventh, getting one off a Jake Larson double to deep right center. They led 12-0 after seven.
North Iowa Area CC transfer Connor Wietegrefe came in for the Gophers in the fifth and struck out the side. He got into a little trouble in the top of the sixth when DCTC loaded the bases with one out, but a 4-6-3 double play turned by freshman Tristan Ellis and sophomore Jake Larson ended the frame.
New Mexico State transfer and Fargo, N.D. native Cam Blazek entered the game for the Gophers on the mound in the seventh inning and immediately struck out the side. He left with one out in the eighth and gave way to redshirt senior Richie Holetz, who completed the frame.
Sophomore Seth Clausen closed out the game in the ninth to seal the 12-4 win.
DCTC scored two runs in the eighth and two in the ninth for its four runs.
