1/3/2023 10:55:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Ta'Lon Cooper led Minnesota with 16 points, Dawson Garcia just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds, and Jamison Battle added 13 points and nine boards, as Minnesota lost 63-60 at No. 14/15 Wisconsin.
Both teams struggled to start the game, with Minnesota going 1-of-9 and the Badgers starting 1-of-8, but Wisconsin made back-to-back field goals to take a 7-2 lead and force a Gophers timeout. Minnesota responded by making 4-of-5, including three-pointers by Braeden Carrington and Cooper and a three-point play from Battle during an 11-2 run to put the Gophers up, 13-9. The Badgers fought back with a 10-2 run to retake a 19-15 lead with 8:25 remaining in the half. Garcia scored five points to help the Gophers grab a 26-24 edge at the 3:10 mark, but Wisconsin closed the half on an 8-0 run for a 32-26 halftime lead.
The Badgers scored the first seven points of the second half and used an extended 13-4 run to quickly open a 15-point lead, 45-30, less than four minutes in. Trailing 47-32, the Gophers put together a 10-2 run keyed by back-to-back treys from Battle to cut the deficit to 49-42. Minnesota used an 11-0 run to pull within one, 54-53, with 8:34 remaining. A banked-in three-pointer late in the shot clock put the Badgers up four with 8:03 left, and neither team scored for the next four minutes until Pharrel Payne's free throw cut it to 57-54. The Badgers led 61-54 with 3:08 on the clock, but the Gophers fought to the end with a 6-2 run to end the game and a chance to tie in the final seconds, but the 20th turnover of the night sealed the win for UW.
The Gophers outrebounded the Badgers, 40-24, but committed 20 turnovers to Wisconsin's nine. Both teams had 24 field goals and seven free throws, while Wisconsin held an 8-5 from beyond the arc.
Minnesota is back in action on Jan. 7 when the Golden Gophers host Nebraska at 11 a.m., at Williams Arena. It's also alumni day at the event and throwback game for the Golden Gophers.
