10/26/2023 8:19:00 AM | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country

MINNEAPOLIS -- Championship season will officially begin for the University of Minnesota Gophers cross country teams this Friday, Oct. 27, when the Maroon and Gold head to Madison, Wis., for the 2023 Big Ten Conference Championships. The men's 8K (4.97 mile) race kicks things off at 10:45 a.m. followed by the women's 6K (3.73 mile) race starting at 11:45 a.m.

BIG TEN SQUAD
The women's team will race 12 student-athletes in Ann Arbor while the men will have eight in uniform:

The men's side will consist of Emmet Anderson, Leo Goodman, Eli Hoeft, Noah Kohut-Jackson, Aaron Leavens, Owen Lindseth, Dan VanAcker and Griffin Ward

The women will be represented by Emma Atkinson, Elsa Bergman, Lila Branchaw, Brianne Brewster, Zoie Dundon, Ceci Howes, Delia Johnson, Taylor Kreitinger, Caroline Mendyk, Erin Reidy, Izzy Roemer and Ali Weimer

ABOUT BIG TENS
For the first time since 2010, Wisconsin will host the Big Ten Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 27. Fans can park at Blackhawk Church and take a free shuttle to the course starting at 9 a.m. Outside of the team championship, awards will be handed out to individuals who finish in the top seven (First Team All-Big Ten) and individuals who finish between eighth and 14th (Second Team All-Big Ten).

LAST TIME OUT
The last time the full Minnesota cross country team was in action was at the XC23 Pre-Nationals Meet at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Va., on Oct. 14, where the women's team finished in 19th and the men finished in 22nd.

The men's team was led by Emmet Anderson who finished 40th overall in a lifetime best 8K time of 24:02.9. Minnesota's women's team saw two individuals finish in the top 70 with Brianne Brewster finishing first in a time of 21:10.6 at the 6K distance to finish 63rd. Overall No. 6 BYU won the women's race with Arkansas and host Virginia rounded out the top three. The men's team that left Charlottesville, Va., victorious was No. 21 Arkansas with 35 team points while Tennessee was second and host Virginia was third.

A FAMILIAR COURSE
The University of Minnesota did compete at the Zimmer Championship Cross Country Course earlier this season in the Big Ten Preview meet, with the men's team winning the meet and the women finishing fourth. The win for the men was the first for the program away from home since 2018 and led to the program being named the NCAA Team of the Week.

Redshirt freshman Shane Griepentrog (24:30.2) was the top finisher in the men's 8000m race in Madison, finishing fourth overall while senior Taylor Kreitinger (18:22.1) was the top female finisher at 10th overall in the women's 5000m competition.

BIG TEN HISTORY
Minnesota's last Big Ten championship performance came from the women's team at the 2021 Big Ten Championships, capturing the team's first team title since 2008. Megan Hasz won the individual title a year after her sister Bethany Hasz had won for the Gophers. Of that championship roster just two remain on this year's team with Emma Atkinson, who finished 67th overall in 2021, and Brianne Brewster, who finished 69th.

Last season the men took home 10th as a team with Emmet Anderson's time of 25:14.30 being the top finisher, which helped him finish 52nd overall. Minnesota's most recent top finish at the conference meet came in 2021 where the team finished third overall. Of that roster only the team's captain, Eli Hoeft, remains on roster.

UP NEXT
NCAA championship season lies ahead for the Maroon and Gold, as both the men's and women's teams will head to Stillwater, Okla., on Friday, Nov. 10 for the NCAA Midwest Regional. Oklahoma State will play host to the Regional Championship, and will hold both races on the Greiner Family OSU Cross Country Course.
