Boman, Nemec, Childers, and Overberg were recognized by the Big Ten
MINNEAPOLIS - Four members of the University of Minnesota soccer team have garnered 2023 Big Ten women's soccer awards, as announced by the conference office on Thursday.
Senior Sophia Boman and graduate transfer Megan Nemec were named to the All-Big Ten Third Team while freshman Kate Childers earned Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors. Junior Elizabeth Overberg was given the Sportsmanship Award.
For the fourth consecutive season, senior captain Sophia Boman has earned herself a spot among the conference's best players. Alongside Nemec, Boman was named to the third team following an impressive season in Minnesota's midfield. The Edina, Minn., native kicked off the year being named to the Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch list. Against St. Thomas, she scored her first career hat-trick and recorded a season high seven shots in Minnesota's home opener against Niagara. Boman finished the year with five goals, the second most for the Maroon and Gold, led in shots (54) and shots on goal (25). She competed in every game this past season, competing in a full 90 every match but three.
For Nemec, the third team selection adds to her list of honors from a decorated soccer career. The forward earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week honors on Aug. 22 after scoring three goals against Niagara and New Hampshire, including a brace in her first appearance donning the Maroon and Gold. The Tinley Park, Ill., native co-led Minnesota in assists (5) and was third overall in goals (3). She wrapped up the season competing and starting in every game except for one, totaling 1,105 minutes.
After starting and competing in all 17 of Minnesota's matches, Kate Childers was recognized to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team. The Fenton, Mich., native recorded nine shots, three assists and played a full 90 in eight games this past season. Notably, the midfielder leads all Gopher freshmen in minutes at 1,326.
In representing the Golden Gophers for their Sportsmanship Award honoree, Elizabeth Overberg caps off her junior season with a well-deserved award from the conference. Overberg leads all Gophers in minutes at 1,516, starting all 17 games. The defender missed only 15 minutes of field action this season, recording three shots throughout the fall. Notably, she didn't allow a single shot or shot on goal in Minnesota's 5-0 victory over St. Thomas, which had not happened since Nov. 11, 1997 when the Maroon and Golden defeated Michigan State, 4-0.
