MINNEAPOLIS - Sophia Boman, Izzy Brown, Abi Frandsen, Megan Nemec, Elizabeth Overberg, and Sophia Romine were named to the 2023 CSC Academic All-District Women's Soccer Team on Tuesday.
The 2023 Academic All-District Soccer Team's, selected by College Sports Communicators, recognize the nation's top student-athlete's for their combined performances on the field and in the classroom. The CSC Academic All-America program separately recognizes soccer honorees in four divisions - NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA.
Boman, a senior captain, finished the year with five goals, the second most for Minnesota, led in shots (54) and shots on goal (25). She competed in every game this past season, competing a full 90 in every match but three. She started the 2023 season with Big Ten Preseason Player to Watch nods and scored her first career hat-trick against St. Thomas. The Edina, Minn., native also earned a spot on the All-Big Ten Third Team.
A graduate from Cary, N.C., Brown caps off her collegiate career with the CSC Academic All-District Award. This past season, Brown scored five goals and recorded a season high four shots in four separate matches. The forward had 15 appearances with 12 starts, and scored two game-winning goals against Marquette and Ohio State. Notably, Brown scored the game-tying goal in Minnesota's 3-1 rally over Illinois.
Frandsen, a mainstay in the back line for Minnesota, started all matches except for one during the fall, competing for 1,342 minutes. The Monticello, Minn., native scored her second collegiate goal against New Hampshire over opening weekend. She was named to the Big Ten Preseason Players to Watch List.
A grad transfer from Tinley Park, Ill., Nemec garners the honor after her lone season donning the Maroon and Gold. The midfielder made an immediate impact on the field, earning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week nods from the conference after scoring three goals against Niagara and New Hampshire, including a brace in her first appearance. She co-led the Gophers in assists (5) and was third overall in goals (3). Nemec finished the season competing and starting in every game except one, totaling 1,105 minutes. Alongside Boman, Nemec earned All-Big Ten Third Team honors.
A junior defender, Overberg led all Gophers in minutes at 1,516 and started all 17 games, missing only 15 minutes of field action all season. The Ankeny, Iowa native recorded three shots throughout the fall. Notably, she didn't allow a single shot or shot on goal in Minnesota's 5-0 victory over St. Thomas, which had not happened since Nov. 11, 1997 when the Maroon and Golden defeated Michigan State, 4-0.
Romine, a senior midfielder from Romeo, Mich., rounds out the awards for Minnesota. In 2023, Romine started and competed in all 17 matches and led Minnesota in goals (6). She is the only current Gopher to have finished three braces, scoring her third against Illinois this past season, including the game-winning goal.
