Hawkins Sets Program Assist Record in IUPUI Win

12/12/2023 9:55:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Elijah Hawkins set a school record with 17 assists, and Cam Christie led four players in double-figures with 19 points, as Minnesota (8-3) led from start to finish and improved to 8-1 at Williams Arena with a 101-65 victory over IUPUI.

Hawkins, who has recorded double-digit assists (39 total) in three-straight games, broke a long-standing school record of 16 assists by Arriel McDonald versus Wisconsin on Jan. 12, 1994. As a team, the Gophers had 31 assists, which ranks third all-time. Minnesota led 57-27 at the half, which is the sixth-most points scored in any half and the most since having 58 points in the first half versus SIU-Edwardsville on Dec. 2, 1992.

Christie made 7-of-12 field goals, including 4-of-9 from beyond the arc, and tied his career-high with six rebounds for the second straight game. Parker Fox finished with a season-high 16 points, which included an eye-popping six dunks, and Joshua Ola-Joseph and Mike Mitchell Jr. each had 14 points. As a team, the Gophers made 42-of-67 (627) field goals, including a season high tying 14-of-28 from three-point range.

The Gophers jumped out to an 8-2 lead on three-pointers from Mitchell Jr. and Ola-Joseph and a dunk by Pharrel Payne (nine points, team-high eight rebounds). Ola-Joseph had seven points at the first media timeout, as Minnesota led, 14-6. Ola-Joseph continued his hot start by adding seven more points, giving him 14 points in the first 8:03, as the Gophers stretched the lead to 21-9. Fox added a dunk and a layup and Mitchell Jr. knocked down a jumper for a 27-12 advantage with 11:01 left in the half. The Gophers kept expanding the lead and eventually took a 30-point lead to the half, 57-27.

In the second half, Minnesota's lead reached 41 points, as head coach Ben Johnson was able to clear his bench. A total of 12 players appeared in the game for the Gophers, with 11 scoring points.

The Golden Gophers next host Ball State on Dec. 21.
