MINNEAPOLIS (Feb. 1, 2023) – The University of Minnesota (9-13, 2-9 B1G)women's basketball team was defeated by No. 4/5 Indiana (21-1, 11-1 B1G) 77-54 on Wednesday night at Williams Arena. Freshman Mallory Heyer led the way with 16 points and eight rebounds while Alanna 'Rose' Micheaux registered her eighth double double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Heyer scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half, shooting 5-of-7 in the final 20 minutes of action. For Micheaux, she got to the line eight times in the second half, connected on six of them, to score 10 in the second half while grabbing eight of her 11 rebounds. Also playing well for the Gophers was freshman Mara Braun who scored 13 points, shooting 3-of-6 from beyond the arc while adding a pair of steals.
The opening quarter proved to be too much for the Gophers to overcome in the end, with Indiana racing out to a 20-6 lead after 10 minutes of play. The six points for the Gophers in the first quarter are the second fewest to start a game this season.
The second quarter Minnesota saw improvement on the offensive end, but Indiana's 21 points in the quarter helped balloon the Hoosiers lead to as much as 26 during the second. Redshirt freshman Katie Borowicz proved to be a spark off the bench for Minnesota in the second, scoring five of her seven points during the frame, highlighted by an and-one bucket which helped Minnesota gain some momentum heading into the locker room by scoring eight of the final 12 points of the half to trail 41-20.
In the third quarter the Maroon and Gold came out to play, scoring the first six points of the second half which extended into a 10-4 run that cut the Hoosiers lead to just 15 with 5:55 to go in the third. That 15-point Indiana lead was cut to just 12 just three minutes later when Braun hit one of her three triples but six straight points to end the third put the Hoosiers back up 18 heading into the fourth.
That Indiana momentum to end the third extended into the fourth quarter with the 6-0 run growing into a 12-2 run that saw Indiana's lead get back to 22 with 7:36 to go. Minnesota had one last run in them, scoring eight of the next 10 points to put the score at 66-50, but Indiana kept Minnesota at bay and left Minneapolis with a 77-54 victory.
As a team the Maroon and Gold out rebounded the Hoosiers 40-32, including grabbing 15 offensive rebounds but could only muster six second chance points. The team shot 19-of-56 (33.9 percent) and hit 13-of-17 (76.5 percent) from the charity stripe.
As a team the Gophers shot 18-of-59 (30.5 percent) from the floor and attempted just 10 threes, making two of them. The Wolverines won the rebound battle 45-37 with Minnesota grabbing 10 offensive rebounds.
