Minnesota to Face Marquette, South Dakota at Home

The Golden Gophers host the Golden Eagles at 10:00 a.m. and the Coyotes at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday at Baseline Tennis Center.
MINNEAPOLIS– The University of Minnesota tennis program opens its home slate on Saturday with matches against Marquette and South Dakota. The Gophers will compete against Marquette at 10 a.m. and South Dakota at 3:00 p.m. Both matches will be played at Baseline Tennis Center and are free to attend.
The Maroon and Gold last competed at the ITA Kickoff Weekend last weekend in Norman, Okla. The Gophers went 0-2 on the weekend falling to Oklahoma and Tulsa.
Marquette is 0-2 on the season, losing to Wisconsin and Drake. South Dakota is 1-2 this year, posting a win against Sioux Falls and losing to Iowa State and Drake.
The Competition
Marquette and South Dakota both played in the Minnesota-hosted Gopher Invitational this past fall. Minnesota won all five of its singles matches against South Dakota and went 5-2 in doubles action. The Gophers took every match against Marquette, winning six matches in singles play and five in doubles.
All-Time History
The Gophers are 13-1 all-time against Marquette. The squads first met in October 1987 and also played in 1989, 1995, 1999 (Minnesota's lone loss), 2001, 2002, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2020 and 2022.
In their most recent match, the Gophers won 7-0 on January 23, 2022.
Minnesota is 5-0 all-time against South Dakota. The teams first met in 2016 and have played in 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022. Minnesota has posted three 7-0 wins against the Coyotes and two 6-1 wins.
Minnesota won 7-0 on January 29, 2022, which is the most recent meeting between the two schools.
