MINNEAPOLIS – Four members of the University of Minnesota gymnastics team have earned All-Big Ten team honors, the Big Ten announced Wednesday. Juniors Mya Hooten and Gianna Gerdes have been named to the First Team, and seniors Halle Remlinger and Maddie Quarles have been named to the Second Team.
Hooten earns First Team honors for the second time in her career, and third time being named to an All-Big Ten team. The Woodbury, Minn. native earned Second Team honors last season and First Team honors during her freshman season.
Hooten has earned Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week twice this season, the first time coming after her performance at the Wasatch Classic and the second coming after the Gophers' meet with the Iowa Hawkeyes. She also earned Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honors after recording her fifth career perfect 10 against Illinois at Maturi Pavilion, which added to a career-high score of 39.675 in the all-around.
Gerdes has been an all-around staple in Minnesota's lineup in 2023, having competed in all four events in every meet this season. Her consistent success has rewarded her with All-Big Ten First Team honors, the first time she's been named to an All-Big Ten team.
The Delaware, Ohio native was named Big Ten Gymnast of the Week after her performance at Maryland, during which she recorded a career high on floor (9.950) and tied a career high on vault (9.875). This season Gerdes has recorded a new career high – tied a career high on vault – in all four events, in addition to the all-around.
In her senior season, Remlinger has reached new heights. She earned her first career perfect 10 against Boise State on March 4 on floor. That performance earned her Big Ten Event Specialist honors, also the first time in her career. The Winona, Minn. native was named a nominee for the prestigious AAI Award, and was also named a Big Ten Gymnast to Watch in 2023. She's tied or set new career highs on vault, bars and floor this season.
Like Remlinger, Quarles has taken her competition to the next level in her fourth season in the maroon and gold. She also recorded her first career perfect 10, as judges award her a perfect score on vault at the Big Five meet on Feb. 25. The Andover, Minn. native was named Big Ten Event Specialist of the Week after that performance.
The Maroon and Gold will travel their newly-named All-Big Ten team members to the Big Ten Championships on March 18 at 11 a.m. CT in Coralville, Iowa, broadcast on Big Ten Network.
