Gophers End Season In Second Round of Big Ten Tourney

3/9/2023 11:30:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Pharrel Payne led Minnesota with 17 points and nine rebounds and Braeden Carrington made four three-pointers and finished with 12 points, but the 14th-seeded Gophers wrapped up their season with a 70-54 loss to 6th-seeded Maryland in the Second Round of the B1G Tournament at the United Center. Payne's 17 points came on 6-of-6 field goals and 5-of-5 free throws, and he didn't miss a field goal in the two tournament games.

Maryland jumped out to an 8-2 lead, but the Gophers answered with an 8-0 run from a trio of true freshmen, as Payne scored between three-pointers from Joshua Ola-Joseph and Carrington for a 10-8 lead. The Terps bounced back with a 9-2 run to take a 17-12 lead with 10:17 left in the half. Minnesota cut the deficit to 20-17, but Maryland hit its fifth and sixth three-pointers of the first half to stretch the lead to nine, 26-17. The Terps built a 30-19 lead, but a jumper from Jaden Henley and a pair of free throws by Payne pulled Minnesota back within seven, and that was the margin at the half with the Terps up 31-24. Payne led the Gophers with six points and five rebounds at the break, while Henley had five points, and Dawson Garcia had four points.

A 10-2 spurt by Maryland to open the second half pushed the lead to 41-26 at the 17:23 mark, but Minnesota responded with its own 11-4 run keyed by seven points from Payne to pull within 45-37. Payne added two more field goals to stay within eight at 49-41, and giving him 11 of the Gophers' past 13 points at that point. Maryland scored the next seven points to once again stretch the lead to 15 points, 56-41, but Carrington knocked down back-to-back treys and Ta'Lon Cooper hit a jumper to pull within 58-49. However, the Terps outscored Minnesota 12-5 over the final 5:15 to advance to Friday's quarterfinals against 3rd-seeded Indiana. Cooper finished with six assists, five points, four rebounds, and a pair of steals, while Henley had seven points, and Garcia added six points and four rebounds.
