U Mourns Loss of Archie Givens Jr.

Givens, who would become a philanthropist, humanitarian and businessman, lettered for the Gophers in 1965

The University of Minnesota mourns the passing of football alumnus Archie Givens Jr. (front row, No. 46 in the team photo). 

Mr. Givens, 78, passed away on April 19, 2023, in Minneapolis after suffering from Alzheimer's disease for several years. 

Mr. Givens play football for the Gophers in the mid-1960s and earned a letter in 1965. He attended Minneapolis Central High School before coming to the Minnesota. 

After college, Mr. Givens would go on to become a philanthropist, humanitarian and businessman. He was a member of Minnesota's first Black millionaire family and was the president of the Legacy Management & Development Corp. 

Givens was supporter of the arts, culture and literacy and he and his family supported theaters, libraries, civic causes and history projects. The Givens Collection of African American Literature is housed at the University of Minnesota and the men's basketball team visited it last year.
