The USTFCCCA's first Event Squad Rankings were unveiled on Monday.
MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota men's track and field team had two of its event groups (100m and Hammer Throw) ranked No. 1 in the nation, according to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), on Monday afternoon. As an overall team the Maroon and Gold came in at No. 11 in the country after an idle weekend to begin April. Last week the Golden Gophers were ranked No. 1 in the nation as a team for the first time in program history.
The USTFCCCA Event Squad rankings places a rank order to a program's 'squad' of athletes in a particular event, using the cumulative season-best qualifying marks from a team's top-four ranked athletes on the national descending-order list. A team must have four or more athletes with a valid season-best mark recorded with TFRRS to achieve a ranking in a particular event. Minnesota's top-ranked 100m crew is composed of Kion Benjamin, Devin Augustine, Carlon Hosten and Jaydon Antoine with the quartet edging out 100m groups like Houston, Alabama, Texas and LSU. The Gophers' hammer thrower group is led by Kostas Zaltos along with Jake Kubiatowicz, Kaleb Siekmeier and Isaiah Schafer and is ranked ahead of schools like Auburn, North Dakota State, Southeast Missouri and Drake.
As of April 3 the Golden Gophers have five individuals that are ranked inside the nation's top 12 in their respective events. Minnesota's top ranked individual is Kostas Zaltos in the men's hammer throw, a mark of 73.36m (240-8) that he set on March 24, 2023, at the Clyde Hart Classic in Waco, Texas. Others ranked in the top 12 include Isaiah Schafer (No. 4, Shot Put), Kion Benjamin (No. 10, 100m), Devin Augustine (No. 11, 200m) and Jak Urlahcer (No. 12, Pole Vault).
