Connor Wietgrefe Named Big Ten Pitcher of the Week

He struck out seven in 4.0 innings Friday at No. 19 Maryland
ROSEMONT, Ill. -- Minnesota Golden Gophers sophomore left-hander Connor Wietgrefe has been named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
The Prior Lake, Minn., native came up huge in Minnesota's first top-25 win of the season Friday at Maryland. In 4.0 innings of work, he tied a career-best with seven strikeouts, two hits and no runs allowed. He didn't walk any Terrapins and allowed just two runners to reach base, picking up his fourth save of the season.
Wietgrefe ranks second out of the Minnesota bullpen with 20 appearances and also ranks second in ERA (3.95). A transfer from North Iowa Area Community College, he has never won Big Ten Pitcher of the Week.
George Klassen was the last Gopher to win the award on March 20, 2023.
Minnesota is back in action tomorrow at 6 p.m. CT vs. South Dakota St. at Siebert Field. B1G+ will stream.
