SEATTLE, Wash. - The Minnesota Golden Gophers fell 5-4 in a 13-inning marathon matchup to the McNeese Cowgirls Friday.
Freshman Sydney Schwartz (2-2) took the loss in the circle for Minnesota (37-18). The right-hander went six innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on five hits, allowing two walks and striking out three. Junior Jacie Hambrick was a bright spot out of the bullpen, going three shutout innings while allowing three hits.
At the plate, the Golden Gophers were led by senior Natalie DenHartog, who went 2-for-5 on the day with a double, a home run and an RBI. Junior Maddy Ehlke compiled a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 4-for-6 with two doubles. Sophomore Kayla Chavez also helped out for Minnesota, putting together one hit in six trips to the plate while adding a home run and an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Golden Gophers got on the scoreboard first, starting in the second inning. Senior Sydney Strelow came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minnesota and get them on the board.
The Cowgirls then tied the ballgame at one before the Golden Gophers came back to reclaim their advantage in the third inning. Minnesota picked up a run on Chavez's leadoff home run off of junior Ashley Vallejo, which brought the score to 2-1 in favor of the Golden Gophers.
Minnesota's lead had evaporated by the time the sixth inning came around and turned into a 3-2 McNeese advantage, when the Golden Gophers tied up the game at three. The Golden Gophers scored once on an RBI single off the bat of sophomore Taylor Krapf.
The Cowgirls busted up the tie and grabbed the lead heading into the thirteenth inning, when Minnesota got back on the board. The Golden Gophers drove in a run on DenHartog's leadoff home run off junior Whitney Tate, tightening the McNeese lead to 5-4. The Golden Gophers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
