Young Earns Trio of All-America Honors in Final Meet with Gophers
6/8/2023 9:52:00 PM | Women's Track & Field
MINNEAPOLIS -- Amira Young, one of the most successful Gophers in history, concluded her incredible career on Thursday night in Austin, Texas, at the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium. Young earned All-America honors as a member of the 4x100m relay team as well as in the 100m and the 200m.
Young leaves the Twin Cities as an eight-time All-American in her career with the Golden Gophers. She earned three distinctions indoors and five of those honors outdoors. The Chicago, Ill., native goes down as the second-most decorated Gopher in women's track and field history in regards to All-American status just one honor behind the great Heather Dorniden's nine All-America honors.
The day was started with the women's 4x100m relay with Young anchoring a team that included Odell Frye, Lauren Hansen and Akilah Lewis. The quartet improved on their 20th-place finish in 2022 with a 17th-place finish in 2023. The team clocked a new school record time of 43.78 to earn the honorable mention All-America status for the second consecutive season and missed out on Second Team honors by just one place.
A short time later Amira Young was back on the track on the straightaway. Minnesota's school record holder tied Kion Benjamin's 14th-place finish to tie the program record, men's or women's, for the best NCAA finish in a time of 11.21 (-0.1 m/s). The Second Team All-America honor made Young the first woman to earn the All-American distinction in the event in program history.
In her final race of her college career Young laid it all on the track with her second-fastest performance in her career with a time of 23.05. Young's 17th-place finish was just short of another Second Team All-America finish, but Young settled for her eighth All-America honor in her career by finishing fourth in her heat.
The women's track and field team will not contest an event on Saturday's final day of the 2023 NCAA Outdoor Championships. The final event of Minnesota's track and field collegiate season will be Matthew Wilkinson in the 3000m steeplechase final on Friday night at 8:24 p.m. CT, on ESPN2 or on ESPN+.
