MINNEAPOLIS – The six University of Minnesota swimmers that were present at the Phillips 66 National Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. represented their school well, as three Gophers earned Olympic trials cuts in their respective events.
Seniors Megan Van Berkom, Chris Nagy, William Christenson and Kaiser Neverman, junior-to-be Eliot Kennedy, and recent graduate Max McHugh competed at the meet.
In her first appearance at the Phillips 66 National Championship Meet, Kennedy represented the 'U' in the 800 Free. Her time of 8:49.38 set a new personal record in the event.
After placing ninth in last year's Phillips 66 National Championship in the 400 IM, Van Berkom returned to the event this year and swam a new personal best. With a time of 4:42.57, she won the 'B' final and placed ninth overall. The 2023 First-Team All-American returned to the finals in the 200 Fly after swimming the second-fastest time of her career in the prelims. Her Olympic Trials cut time of 2:10.59 in the finals was good for a 12th place finish. In the 200 IM, Van Berkom finished 35th with a time of 2:17.01.
Neverman broke the school record – and earned an Olympic Trials Cut – in the 200 Fly prelims, during which he ended with a time of 1:57:31. In the 'B' final of the 200 Fly, he recorded a time of 1:58.39. Neverman also swam in the 200 IM 'C' final and finished with a time of 2:03.63.
McHugh earned a 10th-place finish in the 100 breast with a time of 1:00.77. He was disqualified from the 50 breast.
In his second consecutive summer at the Phillips 66 National Championships, Nagy set a new personal record and earned an Olympic Trials Cut with his 15:20.39 time in the 1500 Free, which earned a 12th-place finish. Nagy earned a second personal record with his performance in the 800 Free, in which he finished with a time of 8:03.10. That time was good for 15th place, and also lowered his Olympic Trials Cut from earlier this season.
Christenson recorded a time of 1:59.88 in the 'C' final of the 200 Fly, good for a 22nd place finish in the event. In the 400 IM, Christenson set a personal record in the 'C' final when he finished with a time of 4:21.60, good for a 19th-place finish.
