Three Gophers appeared on the 2023 Big Ten Players to Watch list

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota soccer team had three student-athletes named to the 2023 Big Ten Players to Watch list, announced by the conference office on Monday. Sophia Boman, Megan Plaschko, and Abi Frandsen were all recognized. This is Boman's third time being named to the list, Plaschko's second and Frandsen's first.

Boman, a three-time All-Big Ten selection, has started all 48 matches in her career as a Golden Gopher. Last season, the midfielder led Minnesota in points (16), shots (35) while ranking second in goals, marking a career high of five scored in a single season. Against Marquette, she secured a career high five points in a single match with two goals and an assist.

Now entering her fifth season, the three-time Big Ten Goalkeeper of the Week, and Big Ten Distinguished Scholar enters 2023 with 47 starts and 45 appearances. During her senior season, the Eagan, Minn., native picked up five shutouts and needs one more to enter Minnesota's top five all-time shutout record. Currently, she sits at sixth overall (19) and needs one more to surpass Teresa O'Hearn (1993-1996).

With 18 appearances and 17 starts last season, Frandsen was a consistent piece of Minnesota's backline. Starting in the right outside back spot, Frandsen contributed to the Gophers' five shutouts last season. Offensively, the Monticello, Minn., native dished out 16 shots and set a career high of three against Drake (Sept. 1) and matched it against Omaha (Sept. 8). Frandsen also assisted Sophia Romine's against Maryland (Oct. 16).

In addition, the conference released the 2023 Big Ten Coaches' Poll, where Minnesota found itself sitting ninth among the 14 teams.

The Golden Gophers kick off its 30th Year on Thursday night against Niagara at 6 p.m. at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
