The second-annual Gopher men's basketball softball game came with an additional surprise as the team ended their summer camp. Redshirt sophomore Jackson Purcell (Apple Valley, Minn.) walked away, not only with a win, but a scholarship for the 2023-24 season. It marks the second-straight year a Gopher walk on has been granted a one-year scholarship, as Will Ramberg received one in the 2022-23 season. With the Purcell scholarship, Minnesota rounds out its 13 scholarships for the 2023-24 season.

Purcell joined the Gopher men's basketball team as a walk on in 2021-22, but missed the entire season due to injury. As a redshirt freshman in 2022-23, Purcell made his collegiate debut against St. Francis Brooklyn. A Carlson School of Management enrollee and finance major, Purcell was also named an Academic All-Big Ten selection last year. Prior to his Gopher tenure, Purcell played at Eastview High School and AAU's with Minnesota Select. As a senior with Eastview in 2020-21, he averaged 12.8 points per game and scored in double figures eight of 11 games despite suffering an injury. He was a member of the South Suburban League championship team both senior and junior years and was an all-conference selection in 2020-21. Purcell helped Eastview to an 11-0 start  his senior season before being sidelined with an injury and was named to the 2021 Mr. Basketball Watch List. As a junior, Purcell helped Eastview to a 24-4 record and a South Suburban Conference championship en route to the Class 4A Section 3 finals.

The Gophers return to campus at the end of August and begin official season practice in September.
