All of the bracket play portion of the Nations League Final will be contested on Friday morning.
MINNEAPOLIS -- After a perfect run in the Pool Play portion of the 2023 Nations League Final Mara Braun and the United States U21 3x3 Team have advanced to the quarter finals in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. The red, white and blue were victorious over Spain, France and Jordan to reach the bracket play portion of the event that begins on September 15. The quarter finals, semi finals and final will all be contested on Friday morning and can be watched on the FIBA 3x3 Official YouTube channel.
Braun is joined on Team USA's U21 Nations League roster by Christina Dalce (Villanova), Morgan Maly (Creighton) and Lucy Olson (Villanova) in Mongolia. The United States U21 and Poland were the only two teams to win all three of their pool play games while the French U21 team and China only had to play twice and picked up both wins to advance out of their respective pools.
In pool play Braun and Team USA took on Spain first to take a 19-12 win. The two teams played one another tight early as the U.S. led 5-1 to start thanks to three-straight scores from Braun. Spain responded with a 3-0 run to push USA U21's lead back to one (5-4) with just under six minutes to play. The U.S. took back a two possession lead shortly after, and while Spain stayed within four points heading into the final three minutes (11-7), the U.S. rattled off an 8-4 run to propel them to the victory. In game one Braun led the United States with a total of six points.
The second game was a much tighter contest against France. Neither team led by more than three points throughout. The French owned a 15-12 lead after the first six minutes but Team USA responded with a 4-0 run to shift momentum and take the 16-15 advantage. The two teams later found themselves tied again at 18. With the French in foul trouble, Team USA capitalized at the line twice to push to a 21-18 victory.
Pool Play concluded with a massive 14-1 run for Team USA on their way to a 22-9 victory over Jordan. With the game tied at 8-8, the Americans rattled off 11-straight points capped by three consecutive 2s from the red, white and blue.
The first game of bracket play begins at 2 a.m. CT with China and France and will conclude with the Nations League Final at 7:30 a.m. CT. Both men and women will play games throughout that period of time.
The 2023 Nations League final features 10 different countries on the women's side with Team USA, France, Egypt and Germany all qualifying two women's teams. Different from 5-on-5, 3x3 is played on a half-court with a 10-minute game clock and 12-second shot clock. Play is continuous, as teams "clear" the ball behind the 2-point line following a made basket, defensive rebound or steal. The first team to score 21 points via 1-point field goals or 2-pointers behind the arc is victorious; or if time expires then the team leading wins.
