Former Gopher legend had 122 tackles, six sacks, six forced fumbles, four recovered fumbles, three interceptions and 12 pass breakups for the Buccaneers this year
Former University of Minnesota safety and current Tampa Bay Buccaneer Antoine Winfield Jr. was named first-team All-Pro today.
Winfield is just one of two safeties in the entire NFL to receive this honor and he is the first Gopher to be named first-team All-Pro since Green Bay Packer linebacker De'Vondre Campbell (played at Minnesota from 2013-15) in 2022.
Winfield has been a dominating, play-making force for the Buccaneers this season and is a candidate for NFL Defensive Player of the Year.
He finished the regular season with 122 tackles, six sacks, six forced fumbles, four recovered fumbles, three interceptions and 12 pass breakups. According to the Buccaneers, he is the first defensive back with six sacks and six forced fumbles in the same season since 2000, and he is the only NFL player since data became available in 1999 to finish a season with 100 or more tackles and at least three interceptions, three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and three sacks. Winfield led all NFL defensive backs in sacks, forced fumbles and fumble recoveries.
Winfield played at Minnesota from 2016-19 and was a unanimous All-American in 2019. He ended his Gopher career with 177 tackles (126 solo), seven tackles for loss and four sacks. He forced two fumbles, recovered three fumbles, blocked one field goal and scored three career touchdowns (one punt return and two interceptions returned). He had nine career interceptions and tied a school single-season record (modern era) with seven interceptions in 2019.
