Gophers Set to Celebrate Black History Month

1/31/2024 2:40:00 PM | Athletics

The University of Minnesota Athletics department will honor Black History Month in a variety of ways throughout the month of February. This year's theme for Black History Month is African Americans and the Arts, which was designated by the Association for the Study of African American Lift and History.

This year's BHM will feature videos and social media graphics from Gopher alums, current student-athletes, coaches and staff members. Each Friday, a cumulation of the past week's honorees will be featured on gophersports.com.

A commemorative poster has also been created that will be available at events and Athletes Village.

Minnesota men's basketball's Black History Month celebration will be held on February 18 when the Gophers host Rutgers. In that game, the Gophers will wear specialty shooting shirts. This year, Gopher Athletics will celebrate Gopher track athlete Dalayni Etienne's artwork on the men's basketball shooting shirts. Etienne, an art major, and has been with the Gopher track team since the 2020-21 season. This would mark the second time this season she has designed a shirt for the men's basketball team as she also contributed artwork for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The women's basketball team will also celebrate Black History Month at its February 20th game vs. Wisconsin.

The University of Minnesota will also play 'Lift Every Voice and Sing', throughout the month of February. At the turn of the 20th century, James Weldon Johnson, who wrote the lyrics, eloquently captured the solemn yet hopeful appeal for the liberty of Black Americans. Set against the religious invocation of God and the promise of freedom, the song was later adopted by NAACP and prominently used as a rallying cry during the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s.
