Gopher men's hockey hosts Colorado College at 3M Arena at Mariucci at 5pm on Sunday, January 7. Fans arriving to campus for the 4:30pm Men's Basketball game will encounter additional traffic and parking congestion compared to traditional gamedays. All fans are encouraged to arrive early and allocate additional time for arriving on campus.
- Fans who have not obtained a parking pass are encouraged to purchase their parking in advance HERE.
- Valet parking is available on the south side of 4th Street between Williams Arena and 3M Arena at Mariucci. Valet parking passes must be purchased in advance HERE.
- Fans who arrive on campus without a parking pass should park in the Ski-U-Mah Lot, Gopher Lot, or Oak Street Ramp.
STARTING FIVE
• The University of Minnesota men's basketball team returns to Williams Arena to face the Maryland Terrapins on Sunday at 4:30 p.m. The game will be shown on Big Ten Network as well as broadcast on KTLK AM 1130 AM. Minnesota is looking to improve to 3-1 in the Big Ten, which if accomplished, would be the program's best start to the league season since the 2016-17 campaign.
• Minnesota is just 2-16 all time against Maryland Terrapins and looking for its first win since 2017. Since Maryland joined the Big Ten Conference in 2014, the Gophers are just 2-12 and will look to snap a 10-game streak to the Terps Sunday. Minnesota's last home win came on Feb. 18, 2016.
• Minnesota has a well-balanced attack of scoring this season. The Michigan win marked the sixth time this year the Gophers had five players score in double digits and three time the past five games. Minnesota had five score in double figures in the UTSA, New Orleans, Nebraska, Ball State, Maine and Michigan wins. In addition, the Gophers had also had four players score in double figures in the Ark-Pine Bluff, FGCU and IUPUI games.
• Elijah Hawkins tops the nation in assists (108) and assists per game (7.7). Hawkins had seven assists in the win at Michigan and added a double-double in the win against Maine when he had 12 points and 10 assists. It was his fourth double-digit assist game this season and seven with eight or more assists. Additionally, he has allowed just six turnovers in the last four games. As a team, the Gophers had their lowest amount of turnovers this season in the Ball State game when they committed just six turnovers.
• Minnesota had 10 three pointers in the Michigan game Thursday, marking the sixth time this season the Gophers have accumulated 10-plus treys in a game and two games back-to-back. The Gophers accomplished a season-high 14 in wins over UTSA and IUPUI earlier this year. In addition, Minnesota holds one of the best shooting efficiencies in college basketball. Through 14 games, the Gophers have made 406 field goals for 769 attempts, including 104 treys for a .568 field goal efficiency percentage. That ranks 21st nationally and leads the Big Ten.
WHERE THEY RANK
• Minnesota continues to show its depth winning the bench-point advantage in 13 of 14 games this year. Minnesota's highest bench-point production came in a 62-20 advantage during Minnesota's nonconference game against New Orleans. The only game where the opponent scored more bench points was against Missouri in a 26-20 Tiger advantage. Minnesota ranks first in the Big Ten in this category and 43rd in the nation.
• The Gophers also fifth nationally in assists per game, averaging 19.9 a game. Minnesota ranks high nationally and in the Big Ten in a couple categories in addition to bench points and assists. Minnesota also ranks 25th nationally in field goal percentage (49.5). The Gophers also rank first in the Big Ten and 21st nationally in effective field goal percentage (.568) and third in the league, 47th nationally in rebound margin (6.4).
LAST GAME RECAP
• Mike Mitchell Jr., led five players in double-figures with 18 points, Dawson Garcia had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds, Elijah Hawkins had 14 points and seven assists, and Pharrel Payne came off the bench for 12 points and eight rebounds, as Minnesota (11-3, 2-1 B1G) recorded a key 73-71 road victory at Michigan Thursday.
• Mitchell Jr. made 6-of-12 field goals, including 4-of-9 from three-point range, to lead Minnesota in scoring for the third-straight game. Hawkins finished with a season-high 14 points by making 4-of-5 three-pointers. Garcia notched his third point-rebound double-double of the season, his second in Big Ten play, and Payne was a force in the second half with eight points and five boards after the break.
• Minnesota made 29-of-61 (.475) field goals, including 10-of-24 (.417) three-pointers. Over the past eight games, the Gophers have made 252-of-485 (.520) field goal attempts. Minnesota was just 3-of-13 from beyond the three-point arc in the first half, but made 7-of-11 (636) in the second.
ABOUT MARYLAND
• Maryland is 9-5 this season and 1-2 in the Big Ten, coming off a loss at home to No. 1 Purdue, 67-53. Prior to the Boilermaker loss, the Terps held a five-game win streak, including nonconference win at UCLA, 69-60. Maryland lost its Big Ten opener at Indiana, 65-53, but defeated Penn State in overtime, 81-75, on Dec. 6.
• The Terrapins are led by fifth-year guard and 2023 Second Team All-Big Ten Jahmir Young, who averages 19.8 points. He was named Big Ten Player of the Week after the UCLA game where he scored 37 points in the win. Young ranks fourth in the Big Ten in overall scoring. He's followed by Julian Reese, who averages 13.3 ppg and a team-best 9.5 rebounds per game. That rbg mark ranks second in the Big Ten. His 2.1 blocks per game ranks fourth league wide. Donta Scott rounds out the Terps' top-three scoring as he averages 9.8 ppg.
• As a team, the Terrapins average 71.7 points and allow just 63.6 per game, which ranks second in the Big Ten in scoring defense. They are shooting 40.9 from the field, while allowing their opponents to shoot 40.7, including 35.1 from beyond the arc.
