10/5/2024 1:14:00 AM | Volleyball

Minnesota's seventh five-set match in 13 games

LOS ANGELES, Calif. --The No. 12 Minnesota volleyball team took down RV UCLA in five sets (25-21, 25-22, 21-25, 25-27, 15-10) in their first ever road match against their new Big Ten Conference foe.

"It's a tough team we got here, a resilient team," said head coach Keegan Cook. "There was not a lot of things that went to plan today. We battled some injuries and health and some travel issues. Just a lot of intangibles with our group and I'm proud of them."

The Gophers (9-4, 2-1 Big Ten) hit .189 compared to .183 for UCLA. Minnesota had more blocks (12 to 11) and aces (6 to 4) but trailed in kills (68 to 58) and digs (84 to 66).

Lydia Grote led Minnesota with 13 kills while Calissa Minatee had 11 kills and three blocks while Melani Shaffmaster went for 41 assists, nine digs, eight kills and four blocks. Phoebe Awoleye tallied a team-high six blocks.

Shaffmaster became the first Gopher in program history to record 4,000 career assists, 1,000 digs, 300 kills and 300 blocks with her fourth block tonight.

Anna Dodson led UCLA (7-5, 1-2 Big Ten) with 20 kills and nine blocks while Cheridyn Leverette had 10 kills and 16 digs.

How It Happened
SET 1 | The two teams went back and forth for the first ten points before a 5-1 Minnesota run put the Gophers up 10-6, capped with a kill by Shaffmaster, leading to a UCLA timeout. After the break, the 'U' would extend its lead to as many as eight at 16-8 after a kill from Hanson and a pair of aces from Grote. The Bruins battled back, slicing the deficit to as few as one at 22-21 before Minnesota closed at 25-21 with a kill from Hanson.

SET 2 | UCLA stormed out to a strong start in set two, going up 10-4 before the Gophers made their run. A 9-3 spurt from the 'U' tied it up at 13, book ended by two aces from Shaffmaster. Minnesota grabbed its first lead of the set since 1-0 at 18-17 after a kill from Minatee. The Bruins failed to grab the lead the rest of the way, getting as close as one at 21-20 and 23-22 before a Grote kill and Awoleye solo block ended it with a 25-22 frame win for the visitors.

SET 3 | The Bruins came out hot again, scoring seven of the first 10 before Minnesota took a timeout. A 7-4 run got Minnesota back to within one at 11-10. After a kill from UCLA, three straight Gophers points gave the visitors their first lead of the set since 1-0 at 13-12. The Bruins bounced back to score five of the next six to go up 17-14, leading to a Minnesota timeout. The Gophers would cut the lead to two at 22-20 after a kill from Crowl, but would get no closer, falling 25-21 in the third set.

SET 4 | The Bruins started strong in the fourth set, scoring eight of the first 13 before a 3-0 Gophers run tied it up at 8-8. A block from Awoleye and Grote knotted it up. Neither team could separate as the margin stayed within two for the rest of the set. UCLA led by one to two from 17-16 on until Minnesota tied it up at 23. UCLA made it 24-23 after a kill before Grote tied it up again with a kill of her own. UCLA eventually won it 27-25 on a hitting error from the 'U' to send it to five sets.

SET 5 | The Gophers took an early 2-0 lead before UCLA fought back to go up 4-3. Minnesota ended the first half of the set on a 5-2 run, capped by a kill from Crowl to go up 8-6 at the change. An ace from Elise McGhie put Minnesota up 10-6, forcing the Bruins into a timeout. UCLA would cut the lead to three at 13-10, but would get no closer. Minnesota closed it out with a 15-10 set five victory to take the match.
