'U' Ousted in Three Sets By No. 12 Oregon

11/9/2024 5:40:00 PM | Volleyball

It was the Gophers first time being swept at home since Oct. 2022

MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 14 Minnesota volleyball team dropped its second straight match, falling to the No. 12 Oregon Ducks in three sets (14-25, 20-25, 21-25) Saturday evening at Maturi Pavilion.

"The game is telling us we need to be more committed," said head coach Keegan Cook. "It's tough to hear, but we were making too many changes and we don't want to be doing that at this time of year."

The Gophers (16-8, 9-5 Big Ten) were held to just .127 hitting for the night while the Ducks hit .327. It was the highest a team has hit against the 'U' in 2024.

Julia Hanson led the Gophers with 18 kills while Melani Shaffmaster went for 31 assists and 11 digs. Zeynep Palabiyik led the defense with 14 digs.

Onye Ofoegbu and Mimi Colyer each posted 10 kills and combined for 12 blocks. As a team, Oregon (18-5, 10-4 B1G) posted 14.5 blocks.

How It Happened

The 'U' would cut it to 8-4 after a pair of kills from Hanson, but the Ducks would score four of the next five, taking a 12-5 lead and causing another timeout from coach Cook. A UO service error made it 12-6 before the visitors responded with four straight to go up 10 at 16-6. Minnesota would get no closer than nine the rest of the way and fell 25-14 in the first frame.

SET 2 | The Gophers came out strong, scoring seven of the first 12 to go up 7-5 before a 4-0 Ducks run made it 9-7, visitors, forcing a timeout. After the break, UO scored three more in-a-row, capping off a 7-0 run. The Ducks would get the lead out to seven at 16-9 before the 'U' called their last timeout. Minnesota would cut the lead to as few as four at 23-19, leading to an Oregon timeout. The Ducks would finish out the set scoring two of the next three to win, 25-20. After two sets, UO was hitting .338 compared to .154 for Minnesota.

SET 3 | Minnesota raced out to a 4-0 lead in the third set, getting two aces and a kill from Acevedo before the Ducks called timeout. UO got two kills and an assist to make it 4-3 before a block from Minatee and Hanson and an ace from McGhie got the lead up to 8-4, Minnesota. A 4-0 Ducks run tied it up at 8-8 before the Gophers called timeout. With the two teams tied 12-12, UO posted four straight points to go up 16-12, getting a kill, an ace and a block. After the run, Minnesota called its last timeout. The Ducks scored two more after the break to go up 18-16 before a 4-0 Gophers run sliced the lead to two at 18-16.
