Gophers Drop Road Contest at Iowa

2/11/2024 4:55:00 PM | Men's Basketball

Five Gophers players scored in double-figures, led by a season-high 18 points from Braeden Carrington and 18 first-half points from Dawson Garcia, but Garcia sat for the final 15:45 of the game with an injury, and Iowa (14-10, 6-7 Big Ten) rallied to notch a 90-85 win over Minnesota (15-8, 6-6 Big Ten) at Carver Hawkeye Arena.

Garcia made 7-of-8 field goals and led the Gophers with seven rebounds in just 24 minutes, but his absence over the majority of the second half had a significant impact on the game. Carrington was one of three Gophers with at least three three-pointers, making 3-of-7. Mike Mitchell Jr. made 5-of-8 treys and finished with 17 points, and Cam Christie had 15 points (3-of-8 3FG), four rebounds, and three assists. Parker Fox had 10 points and five boards, and Elijah Hawkins had six assists and five rebounds.

The Gophers built an early 10-4 advantage behind an 8-0 run, with all eight points coming in the paint against the Hawkeyes. Minnesota expanded the lead to 15-6, as Carrington knocked down a three from the left side and Garcia drained a jumper just inside the arc. Garcia's jumper began a stretch where he scored eight straight points, keeping the Gophers in front 21-14. Carrington's second trey of the afternoon and a layup by Garcia gave the Gophers a 26-20 advantage, which Iowa trimmed to 26-24, but Mitchell Jr. scored five points during a 9-0 run that gave Minnesota its largest lead at 35-24 with 6:04 left in the half. Christie drained a long three-pointer for a 38-25 lead, Carrington connected on his third trifecta, and Fox threw down a dunk to make it 43=28 and force an Iowa timeout. Mitchell Jr. closed the first-half scoring with back-to-back three-pointers, giving the Gophers their largest lead at 51-34, and they led 51-38 at the break. The halftime lead was the first this season for Minnesota in Big Ten games. Garcia paced the Gophers with 18 first-half points and five rebounds, while Carrington and Mitchell Jr. each made three treys for 11 points apiece.

The Gophers made 8-of-12 first-half three-pointers, and they kept it going to start the second, as Christie nailed a pair of treys and Mitchell Jr. added his fourth of the game to put Minnesota up 62-42. But Garcia had to leave the game with an injury at the 15:45 mark and did not return. Christie threw down a one-handed jam and hit a jumper for a 68-51 lead with 12:31 remaining, but Iowa trimmed the deficit to 70-62 with an 11-2 run before a three-point play by Carrington put the Gophers up by 11 with 8:38 to play. Minnesota still led 77-65 with 7:40 remaining, but the Hawkeyes stormed back with a 16-0 run to take an 81-77 lead with 4:06 remaining.

Minnesota is back on the road when it travels to No. 2 Purdue, Feb. 15 at 7:30 p.m. CT.
