MINNEAPOLIS – Six members of the University of Minnesota swimming and diving team are ready to compete at the 2024 NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga. this week.

The University of Georgia is serving as the host for the 2024 Championships. Competition commences this evening at Jack Bauerle Pool at Gabrielsen Natatorium with the 200 medley and 800 freestyle relays.

Members of the Gophers are set to compete Thursday through Saturday with prelims at 9 a.m. CT and finals at 5 p.m. CT each day. ESPN+ will have streaming coverage of each finals session. A complete schedule with heat sheets and more can be found at the NCAA Championships Homepage

Minnesota will send senior Megan Van Berkom, junior Eliot Kennedy, sophomores Vivi Del Angel and Addie Albrecht and freshmen Katie McCarthy and Elna Widerstrom to the championship meet. It's the 17th out of the past 18 seasons that the 'U' has sent at least four competitors.

Van Berkom's best ranking comes in the 400 IM where she currently holds the 10th-fastest time in the country at 4:04.36. The time was recorded at the 2023 Minnesota Invitational in November. For the season, she has swum the 400 IM five times and has won it each of those times, including being crowned Big Ten Champion.

The Chatham, Ill. native ranks 21st in the 200 IM with a time of 1:55.88. She recorded the time at the Big Ten Championships last month, where she took home the bronze medal. Van Berkom won four of her five races in the event, placing third in the other.

Van Berkom also owns the 23rd-fastest time in the 200 fly this year. She swam a time of 1:54.78 at the Minnesota Invitational to set the mark.

Kennedy is making her first trip to the NCAA Championships, swimming the 1650 free. Her time of 16:11.50, set at the Big Ten Championships, currently ranks 32nd in the country. The Bloomington, Ill. native swam the event three times this season, hitting the provisional mark all three times.

Like Kennedy, McCarthy is also making her debut at the NCAA Championships, swimming the 1650 free. A freshman from Edina, Minn., McCarthy's season-best time of 16:11.89 ranks 34th in the country.

Del Angel, Albrecht and Widerstrom all qualified for their performances at last week's NCAA Zone Diving Championships.

Del Angel is making her second straight trip to the NCAAs after qualifying in 2023 as a freshman. The Veracruz, Mexico native will compete in all three diving events. Del Angel won the 3-meter at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships with a score of 353.60 in the prelims and 335.00 in the finals. She placed third on both the 1-meter and the platform to secure spots in each event.

Albrecht and Widerstrom are both making their NCAA Championship debuts in 2024. Widerstrom will compete in both the 1-meter and 3-meter after securing top-12 finishes in both at Zones. Albrecht will participate in the 1-meter after finishing 11th at Zones with a 295.45 prelim score and 270.75 finals score.
