Minnesota Adds Teryn Crump, Jayda Lewter to 2024 Class

Both will be enrolled this summer

MINNEAPOLIS -- The University of Minnesota gymnastics program has announced the addition of two more student athletes to its signing class of 2024, head coach Jenny Hansen announced Wednesday. They join an initial group of four student-athletes who signed in November.

"Both young women have a strong desire to excel and reach their full potential in both the classroom and the competition arena," said head coach Jenny Hansen. "They are tremendous fits with our culture here at Minnesota and we can't wait to welcome them to the Gopher family."

An all-around gymnast from the state of Texas, Teryn Crump competed for Capital Gymnastics for coaches Zach Crumpton and Ira Vernya. Here, she won the level 10 uneven bars and floor state championships in 2023 and the level 10 uneven bars and all-around regional in 2022. She also earned the uneven bars state title in 2022.

"I chose Minnesota because when I went on my official visit it immediately felt like a place where I wanted to be a part of," Crump said. "The team and the coaches were the sweetest people and everyone made me feel like I belonged. It was just the best environment in the most indescribable way and being a part of a team like that seemed like a dream come true."

Crump was named her club's 'Gymnast of the Year' and earned the 'Most Consistent' award in 2022.

"Teryn is very talented and has the potential to be an all-around competitor here at Minnesota," Hansen said. "Her strongest event is uneven bars, where she is absolutely spectacular. She is also a standout on the power events."

The daughter of Tacoya and and Terence, Teryn also has two younger brothers, Tyler and Treysen.

"My goal is to be a good contributor to the team and to become a better gymnast every day."

Out of Savage, Minn., Lewter comes to Minnesota as another all-around gymnast. She competed for Legacy Gymnastics for coaches Kari and Will Vaughn. She signed an acceptance of admission letter on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2024.
 
"I chose Minnesota because of the extremely welcoming team atmosphere and the positive coaching style," Lewter said.

Enjoying a great season this year, Jayda has posted a career high of 9.80 on vault, 9.60 on beam and 37.525 in the All-Around at the Salto National Invitational. She also has a career high of 9.6 at the Gliders Invitation earlier this year. In 2023, Lewter finished in the top-10 in the all-around and vault at the Level 10 Regionals. She was an All-Star Vault Specialist at Level 10 Nationals.

"Jayda comes to us from Legacy Gymnastics, home of several current Gophers," said Hansen. "We are thrilled to bring in another talented hometown athlete to the program. She also has tremendous power and we expect her to make a contribution on vault, floor as well as beam during her time as a Gopher.""

The daughter of Jill and Kenny Lewter, she has two brothers, Ken and Kamden. Jayda is undecided on what her major will be at Minnesota.

"My goals as Gopher include contributing to the team in a positive way that will leave a lasting legacy and to grow as an athlete and a person," Lewter said.
