4/1/2024 3:00:00 PM | Softball

The honor is the first conference award for Oakland this year, and third of her career

MINNEAPOLIS - Minnesota sophomore Jess Oakland was named the Big Ten Player of the Week for the first time in her career, the conference announced Monday afternoon.

The award is the third weekly conference honor won by the shortstop, she previously won Big Ten Freshman of the Week last season on Feb. 13 and April 17. Oakland is the first Gopher since Taylor Krapf (Feb. 27, 2023)  to earn the accolade.

Earlier this year, she earned NFCA Player of the Week on March 5, 2024.

Oakland had a stellar outing over the weekend against Illinois. The sophomore went .800 with four home runs and six RBI. In game two, she hit three home runs, a single-game record for Minnesota. With her four runs scored, also a Minnesota single-game record, she totaled 14 bases, another record that hasn't been touched since Anne Thuhl (12, vs. Concordia St. Paul on 4/24/2002).

The Golden Gophers will be back at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium this weekend for their Big Ten home opener against Ohio State. They'll face off on Friday at 5 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m., and Sunday at 2 p.m. CT. Friday and Saturday's game can be streamed on B1G+ while Sunday's game will be live on BTN.
