The stadium achieved 81.6% waste diversion and received a Play to Zero Award

Huntington Bank Stadium, which is home to the University of Minnesota football team, was recently recognized by the Green Sports Alliance as a leader in sustainability.

The stadium was a recent Play to Zero Award Recipient. The Play to Zero awards recognize sports organizations that show, via Play to Zero or other tracking platforms, significant reductions or diversions in waste, water, and/or energy use at their venues. These awards highlight continuous improvements in building-level sustainability around waste, water, and energy use management.

Huntington Bank Stadium was recognized as a Waste Leader for 50%+ diversion from landfill, as it achieved 81.6% waste diversion.

This was a collaborative effort between Gopher Athletics facility staff, University of Minnesota Waste Recovery Services, Aramark, Marsden and Multi-Venue Productions.

The stadium is managed by Jeff Seifriz (Associate AD / Facilities Operations), Brady Buresh (Director of Operations, Huntington Bank Stadium) and their staff.

Public recognition for sustainability efforts is familiar territory for Huntington Bank Stadium, as the venue received LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification in 2009. Huntington Bank Stadium was the first LEED certified football stadium – college or professional – to receive this honor. Huntington Bank Stadium was also a GameDay Zero Waste Touchdown Challenge award winner per a competition conducted by the National Wildlife Federation.
