Minnesota Set to Make Spring Debut in Fort Myers

MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota tennis program opens its 2025 spring season on Saturday with a doubleheader in Fort Myers, Florida. 

The Gophers will face Middle Tennessee at 8:00 a.m. (CT) and Florida Gulf Coast at 12:00 p.m. (CT) at the FGCU Tennis Complex.

On Sunday, Minnesota will take on Florida Atlantic at 1:00 p.m. (CT) at the Kimberly V. Strauss Tennis Center in Boca Raton, Florida.

Saturday will also mark the spring season debuts for both Middle Tennessee and Florida Gulf Coast. 

Florida Atlantic opened its season on Jan. 16 with an upset win over No. 23 Miami.

The Competition
The Gophers are 3-1 all-time against Florida Gulf Coast. The teams first met on March 17, 2014, with Minnesota winning 6-1. In their most recent matchup on Jan. 15, 2022, the Gophers earned a 4-3 victory. 

Minnesota will face Middle Tennessee for the first time in program history on Saturday.

The Gophers are 1-0 all-time against Florida Atlantic, with their lone matchup on Jan. 17, 2022, resulting in a 5-2 Minnesota win.

Fall Recap
Minnesota competed this fall season finishing with a singles record of 57-36 and a record of 40-28 in doubles.

The 'U' opened the season by hosting the 12th-annual Gopher Invitational from Sept. 20-22, during which the Gophers went 21-5 in singles and 13-5 in doubles.
 
The Gophers then competed in the ITA Central Regional Championships from Oct. 9-12, where Yinong Ma and Anlin Xie advanced to the round of 32 in doubles, and Deniz Turan went 5-0 to capture the B draw finals.

Anali Kocevar competed in the ITF W15 tournament from Nov. 4-6, finishing with a 2-1 record and making an appearance in the main draw.

Minnesota wrapped up its season at the CSUN Fall Invitational from Nov. 8-10, finishing 12-11 in singles and 8-4 in doubles.

Gopher Participants
Ten University of Minnesota student-athletes are set to compete in both singles and doubles this weekend: juniors Aiva Schmitz, Arina Valitova, Sofia Pinto, and Anali Kocevar; sophomores Jeselle Ante, Mia Liepert, Anlin Xie, and Yinong Ma; and freshmen Deniz Turan and Nora Knezevic.

Next On The Docket
Minnesota will not compete again until February, when the Gophers will travel to Ames, Iowa, to play Air Force on Feb. 1 and Iowa State on Feb. 2.
