How It Happened
SET 1 | Minnesota started strong, scoring four of the first five. Maryland would respond, tying it up at 6-6. A kill by Kinney and a UMN attacking error put the Gophers up 8-6 before the Terps scored five of the next seven to go up 11-10. Minnesota would tally five of the next six leading into the media break, getting three kills and an ace from Hanson to take a 15-12 lead. The Gophers refused to slow down, getting a kill and a block from Myers, a kill from Swenson and another ace from Hanson to go up 19-12. The Terrapins burned both their timeouts in the 6-0 spurt. UMD would get no closer than six the rest of the way as the Gophers took set one, 25-16. Minnesota hit .3xx for the set, led by Hanson with six kills and two aces.

SET 2 | The 'U' started strong again in set two, scoring seven of the first nine before Maryland called timeout. Hanson had a pair of kills while Gilk, Myers and Kinney had one each. UMD got a block and a kill to make it 9-4 before two kills from Kinney and one from Gilk put Minnesota up 12-4, forcing Maryland's final timeout of the frame. The Gophers would never let the Terps get closer than nine the rest of the way as they put set two away, 25-11.

SET 3 | The Gophers went up 5-0 right away in set three before the Terrapins called timeout. Taylor, Hanson and Myers had kills while Garr had an ace in the spurt. Another Garr ace and a Terps error put the Gophers up 7-0 in the third frame. UMD cut it to 8-2 before two kills from Myers and one from Swenson put Minnesota up 11-2, forcing a Terps timeout. The Gophers would go up by as many as 11 at 14-3 following kills from Kinney and Swenson. The Terps got a black, ace and a service error to cut the lead to eight at 15-7. The Terrapins got no closer the rest of the way as Minnesota accelerated on an 8-4 run to go up 22-11. Hanson had a pair of kills while Crowl had one and Myers had a kill and a block in the spurt.
