Nabwe Leads the Way at M City Classic

12/5/2025 9:33:00 PM | Men's Track & Field, Women's Track & Field

Nabwe won two events on Friday for the Maroon and Gold.

MINNEAPOLIS – Led by two-time defending Big Ten weight throw champion Anthonett Nabwe's wins in the weight throw and shot put, the University of Minnesota women's track and field program secured seven event wins at the M City Classic at the University Fieldhouse on Friday. Both of Nabwe's winning marks in the shot put (16.40m | 53-9 3/4) and weight throw (23.74m | 77-10 3/4) were meet records.

Nabwe's season-opening 23.74m (77-10 3/4) is over four feet further than her 2024 opening weight throw of 22.45m (73-8) at the same meet. Nabwe's 16.40m (53-9 3/4) was also an improvement from last year's opening indoor competition by nearly two feet (15.95m | 52-4).

The first overall event win of the day came via Lily Reiner, who picked up her first career collegiate victory in the women's pole vault with a clearance of 4.01m (13-1 3/4). Reiner, who was victorious over teammate Sofia Condon, won based on the total number of misses. Of note - new pole vault coach Samantha Zilverberg made her coaching debut on Friday and helped Reiner post a lifetime best in the event to pick up the event win.

Kennedy Martinson was the winner of the Pentathlon 60m hurdles in a time of 8.56 seconds, which jump started her day which saw her finish with 3,801 points to finish as the meet's runner up.

Sophomore Kitania Headley won the women's 600m in a time of 1:32.31, holding off teammate Ellie Kuechle's lifetime best 1:32.91. In the women's 300m LauBenra Ben picked up the victory in a time of 39.52, defeating teammate Zeal Kuku's runner-up time of 40.10.

Minnesota's 4x400m relay team of Hailey Anchor, Kuku, Headley and Grace Weber capped off the day with a victory, stopping the clock in 3:52.61.

Additionally, the Maroon and Gold had four victories come via unattached student-athletes with three of them being in men's events. True freshman Ayisat Adebayo was the lone women's unattached winner in the triple jump with a leap of 12.26m (40-2 3/4).

The first men's win of the day came via Zion Campbell in the 60m, stopping the clock in a University Fieldhouse facility record time of 6.59. Campbell, Minnesota's All-American 4x100m relay lead leg a season ago, took down former Gopher and Olympian Devin Augustine (6.69) as well as first-year Gopher Wanyae Belle (6.71).

Attempting just four jumps to secure his win was sophomore Precious Opinion in the men's long jump. The second-year Gopher leaped to a final mark of 7.38m (24-2 1/2) to hold off teammate and fellow unattached Gopher Waukeem Walters' 7.30m (23-11 1/2). Lastly, Angelos Mantzouranis was the winner of the men's weight throw competition with a toss of 22.59m (74-1 1/2) while Anthony Barmes (20.71m | 67-11 1/2) made his debut at Minnesota with a second-place finish.

Minnesota's schedule will not resume until January 10, at the Minnesota Open. The Maroon and Gold have their first road trip of the indoor season on January 16-17, at the Graduate Classic in Lincoln, Neb.
