Garcia's 32 Points Leads Gophers in Comeback Win Over UCLA

Dawson Garcia scored 27 points in the second half to finish with a season-high 32 points and eight rebounds, his third 30-point game this season, and Minnesota (14-12, 6-9 Big Ten) rallied from a 17-point first-half deficit to record a 64-61 win over UCLA (19-8, 10-6 B1G) at Pauley Pavilion.

Minnesota is just the second team to defeat the Bruins at Pauley Pavilion this season, and the Gophers are just the second Big Ten team to travel to Los Angeles and sweep both USC and UCLA. Michigan is the only other team to record wins at both USC and UCLA.

Garcia has scored in double-figures 22 times this season, including his season-best 32 points tonight, 31 points versus Oregon, 30 points versus Oral Roberts, and 16 total games with 20 or more points. He was 9-of-15 from the field, including 3-of-6 from three-point range, and 11-of-12 at the free throw line. Garcia has scored 1,456 career points in his three seasons at Minnesota, and he passed Trent Tucker (1,445 points, 1979-82) for 11th on Minnesota's all-time scoring list this evening. In his career, Garcia has 1,951 points, including time at both Marquette and North Carolina. In the second half, Garcia was 7-of-10 from the field, including 2-of-3 from deep, and 11-of-12 at the line.

UCLA was 23-of-51 (.451) from the field, 6-of-15 from three-point range, and 9-of-19 (.474) at the line. The Bruins made just 5-of-15 free throws in the decisive second half. The Bruins were led by 13 points from Sebastian Mack and 12 points apiece from Tyler Bilodeau and Kobe Johnson.

A Frank Mitchell (4 pts, 4 reb) layup made it 20-12, but the Bruins went on a 9-0 run over a three-minute span before Parker Fox (3 pts, 2 reb) converted a three-point play to trim the lead to 29-15 with 5:09 remaining in the half. A three-pointer by Mitchell Jr. made it a 6-0 Gophers run to pull within 29-18, and another trey by Mitchell Jr. and a steal and breakaway dunk by Garcia made it an 11-2 run to cut it to 31-23 and force a UCLA timeout. At the half, the Bruins led, 34-23.

After Bilodeau missed a pair of free throws for UCLA, Patterson scored on a layup to make it an 11-2 Gophers run and give Minnesota its first lead with 1:02 left, and the Bruins called timeout. Mack scored on a layup to put UCLA up 61-60 with 44.5 seconds left, and Minnesota used a timeout. Patterson missed a deep three, but after UCLA missed a free throw, he came back and hit a driving layup with 7.0 seconds left to put Minnesota up 62-61. UCLA called timeout with 0:04 left, but Mack was whistled for an offensive foul with 1.7 seconds left and Garcia hit a pair of free throws to secure the 64-61 win.
