Mallory Heyer recorded her third double-double this season
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Mallory Heyer registered a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, but the Minnesota women's basketball team (18-6, 6-6 B1G) fell to the Iowa Hawkeyes (16-7, 6-6 B1G) 68-60 at home Thursday night.
In addition to Heyer's double-double, the Golden Gophers were led by Amaya Battle, who put up 12 points and two steals, and by Tori McKinney, who chipped in with 16 points.
The Minnesota defense caused its share of mistakes in Thursday's game, forcing 14 Iowa turnovers while committing 11. Those takeaways turned into nine points on the offensive end of the floor. Battle's two steals led the way individually for the Maroon & Gold.
How It Happened
Minnesota struggled out of the gate, falling behind 18-7 at the end of the first quarter.
Iowa kept adding to that lead, building a 21-9 advantage before Minnesota went on a 5-0 run, highlighted by a three from Heyer, to narrow its deficit to 21-14. Iowa responded and expanded its lead, leaving the Gophers trailing 32-21 heading into halftime.
Iowa continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 34-21 advantage before Minnesota went on a 5-0 run, punctuated by a three from Annika Stewart, to trim its deficit to 34-26 with 7:33 to go in the third. The Gophers continued to reduce the Iowa lead, shrinking it to 43-37 by the end of the third quarter. Minnesota played well near the basket, scoring eight of its 16 points in the paint.
Iowa kept widening its lead in the fourth, constructing a 49-42 advantage before Minnesota went on a 5-0 run, finished off by McKinney's layup, to shrink the deficit to 49-47 with 6:58 to go in the contest. Iowa responded and outscored the Gophers the rest of the way, ending the game with a final score of 68-60. Minnesota got a boost from its bench in the period, with non-starters scoring eight of its 23 total points.
