The senior from Brookfield, Wis., will sit out the rest of 2025
MINNEAPOLIS -- Minnesota senior outside hitter Mckenna Wucherer will be out for the remainder of the 2025 season, the program announced today. This decision was made out of an abundance of caution for her health. She has been dealing with a back injury since last season.
"There's nothing more important than the long-term health and wellness of our student-athletes," said head coach Keegan Cook. "While we are disappointed that Mckenna won't be playing this season, we are certain this decision is what's best for her. We will continue to work tirelessly to ensure her full recovery and return to competing for Minnesota in 2026."
A 2025 Preseason All-Big Ten selection, Wucherer has played in 77 career matches for Minnesota, posting 2.86 kills, 1.34 digs and 0.5 blocks per set. Her 764 career kills are the highest on Minnesota's 2025 roster.
"While I am heartbroken to not be able to compete this year, I know this is the best decision for my long-term health," Wucherer said. "I am fully committed to using this time to put in the work behind the scenes to return stronger than ever for one final season in the Maroon and Gold."
The two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree has made AVCA All-North Region Honorable Mention twice in her career. She made the Big Ten All-Freshman Team in 2022. As a sophomore in 2023, she was the Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge MVP and earned Big Ten/Big 12 Challenge All-Tournament honors as Minnesota took home the event title.
"To my medical team, thank you for your ongoing efforts and dedication towards guiding me to a full recovery. To my coaching staff, teammates and family, thank you for your constant support and belief in me every step of the way. See you in 2026, Minnesota."
The No. 11 Golden Gophers (0-1, 0-0 Big Ten) are back in action on Friday for their home opener against Cal Poly.
