Gophers Drop Two Games to Open SDSU Season Kickoff

GAME 1 | Miami (OH) 5, Minnesota 3
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Sydney Schwartz was dominant on Friday, striking out eight Miami (OH) hitters over seven innings of work, but it was not enough as the Minnesota Golden Gophers fell to the RedHawks 5-3 in their opening game of the SDSU Season Kickoff Tournament.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gophers got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. Tara Wolocko came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minnesota and get them on the board.
The RedHawks then rallied to score two runs and take a 2-1 lead before the Golden Gophers got back on the board in the fourth. Jessa Snippes came across to score the lone run of the inning for Minnesota on a solo homerun, which brought the score level at 2-2.
Miami (OH) broke that tie and took a 5-2 lead heading into the sixth, when Minnesota narrowed the gap to 5-3. The Golden Gophers were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.

GAME 2 | San Diego State 3, Minnesota 2
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Minnesota softball team fell 3-2 to San Diego State on a walk-off single Friday night at the SDSU Season Kickoff. The Gophers erased an early deficit to tie the game, but the Aztecs plated the winning run in the bottom of the seventh to secure the victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gophers scored first once again, as Sydney Schwartz took advantage of a wild pitch in the top of the second inning to score with two outs.
San Diego State responded in the bottom of the inning with a two-run home run to take a one-run lead after two innings.
Minnesota rallied to tie the game two innings later, as Cameron Chard singled to right field to score Brooklyn Jones from second.
The teams battled through scoreless innings until the bottom of the seventh, when the Aztecs hit a walk-off single to right field to score the winning run from second and earn the 3-2 victory Friday night.

» Macy Richardson threw five strong innings, allowing two earned runs with three strikeouts.
