In Minnesota football’s “golden years,” Larry Buhler was the team’s leading scorer, a top backfield defender and a part-time punter. The fullback from Windom, MN posted a 4.8 rushing average during his 1936-38 career.

Buhler cracked the starting lineup as a sophomore in 1936, and led the team in rushing with an average of 6.66 yards per carry.

In 1938, he earned All-America honorable mention, was the Chicago Tribune Most Valuable Player and was named MVP by his teammates. He also placed third in voting for the Big Ten MVP and was selected to play in the East-West Shrine game.

Buhler became Minnesota’s second first-round NFL draft pick in 1939, when the Green Bay Packers selected him ninth overall. He played three years in the NFL.
