If not for his teammate John Mayasich, Dick Dougherty may have become known as the greatest Gopher hockey player ever. Considered one of the top U.S. players of the 1950s, he teamed with Mayasich and Gene Campbell on what coach John Mariucci called “the greatest line ever seen in college hockey.”

Dougherty accumulated 187 points at Minnesota, second only to Mayasich at career’s end and 10th all-time 50 years later. His 2.15 points per game still ranked second all-time, behind Mayasich, and he was fifth all-time in career goals (109) and season goals (42).

The Gophers tied for the WCHA Championship in 1953 and won it outright in 1954, and Dougherty helped them reach the NCAA Championship Game both years. A first-team All-American in 1954, he was first-team All-WCHA in both 1953 and 1954.

The International Falls native played on the U.S. team that won silver at the 1956 Olympics, and on the U.S. National Team that placed fourth at the 1955 IIHF World Championships. He played for the 1955 Warroad Lakers, who won the United States Senior National Championship, and for seven seasons with the Green Bay Bobcats of the United States Hockey League.

In 2003, Dougherty was inducted into the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame.
